Here is some other info that Brett Bennett sent me in an e-mail:
The particular knife you have is the 10th knife I ever made. According to my records, it originally sold in March 2001. It is the only one of that exact design. I redesigned subsequent wharncliffes by rounding the pointed edges at the end of the handle. I have made 3 of the redesigned wharncliffes.
I have made less than 70 knives to date. I started making in 1999 and made about 2 knives per year for the first few years. Due to other commitments, I have been very spare time for the last couple years. Lately, I have been a bit more active and recently redesigned my website and am in the process of getting new work made and pictures taken, etc.
I do all of my own work, although Rob Simonich (RIP) used to do my heat treating before I got my own equipment and became proficient at it. He hardened the blade on your knife.
When someone asks how long it took to make a particular knife, I usually jokingly reply "too long". Honestly, I don't know exactly and it does vary knife to knife. I do quite a bit of hand work, which takes considerable time. I will say that 20 hours is probably about the minimum.
Here are some stats on your knife:
D2 hardened to 60-61 RC
416 stainless steel bolsters
mosaic pins
tapered tang
stabilized black ash burl handle (just noticed the website is incorrect)
For those of you that are not familiar with Brett Bennetts work, he is outstanding! The pisc simply do not do this knife any justice. I have never seen better quality on ANY knife. He is about quality not numbers. I just am not a fixed blade kind of guy so I will trade for a nice custom folder or two or several nice production folders. I like single bladed one hand open and close type knives. I prefer pointy thin blades not thick Tantos with chisel ground blades 1/4" thick. Some of the knives I like are Benchmade 921, 940, SPyderco Centofante II, Police, Para. That is to give you an idea of the type of knife I tend to prefer. No prybars with handles please.
