Brief History of Pocket Knives

Good work Al  There are one or two typos. Personally, I'm rather sceptical regarding the Ettrick.

I think it would be great if we could have a Resources sticky, as somewhere to post this, and stuff like keys to old tang stamps (Case, Imperial, etc), links to informative articles, and knife history PDFs. I have a whole load of stuff I could put up there, and I'm sure many others could. It'd be a good place to members to visit to find info, searchable like every other thread, and might even help stop some of the same questions coming up all the time

Jack,

I was actually paraphrasing you:

“The Ettrick is a very traditional Sheffield pattern, which some claim goes back to the 1700’s. It’s name comes from the Scottish Ettrick Valley, where it was used by sheep farmers.”

On my list I said 1700s. The plural got lost in translation.

I can fix any thing on this list - I can make it look how ever you want? color? size? text - font? what ever......
Fixed a few type o's already - If I miss some point them out - Thanks

Right ho Ray! :) The knife is certainly named for the Ettrick Valley, but whether or not the pattern was invented there, or was a piece of marketing by canny Sheffield cutlers, I'm unsure ;) It's the word "developed" which concerns me :)

So Jack start another thread and use this if you want. I can lock this thread?

Fixed the list again- note changes....

I'd be interested in some French knife dates, there must be plenty from the birth of the Laguiole, the birth of the Thiers branding, etc.

Hey Clem, there's a new function called Resources which is a place for information like this. It's designed to be more of a reference without having the info muddied up with other comments. For now Kevin's got 2 categories, Knife Identification and Knife Making . A manufacturers history for each of the companies would be helpful for when You want to find out when Case started making knives or when Schrade moved from Walden to Ellenville. Instead of looking for a thread and paging through replies or scanning the internet for all the possibilities, the correct as well as incorrect answers members can go directly to Resources and get their answers without any commentary.

Just a thought and a suggestion, check it out if you get a chance. Than again some historical and reference threads require the commentary and members enjoy chatting in it. Just wanted to alert some of the fine folks to another fine function in this new format.

A good start for a good idea, and others such as T. Erdelyi might know best how to format this thread for easier accessibility.
