Brief review Kershaw Cyclone Ti/ZDP

Hey gull wing (or anyone else).... I just recieved a mini-cyclone and want to reprofile it.

How did you remove the thumbstud?

Darn, isn't anyone else curious about the "other one" that Thomas couldn't talk about the other day? He clearly wants us to ask him about it.

How about it Thomas? Ya couldn't talk about it because you were at work, right? It's the weekend now, no one from work would ever see a post here, right? ;)

Everyone is so sad after losing out on the giveaway :(.

Knocked the wind right out of the fight.

Everyone is so sad after losing out on the giveaway :(.
Everyone is a winner. After I receive it I’ll send it as a passaround for evaluation, no testing. I’ll post details after I receive and have played with it a little.

AS for the other one?? Something in M4?? How about a mini Storm?

I've recently picked up a mini-cyclone zdp blade and like it a lot
I don't find the edge to be overly thick, it cuts well, if it were a
bit thinner, that would be ok and will pobably get there as I go
through the motions of sharpening, but for now, it cuts plenty well
as she sits.

STR, I've seen several of your modded knives and you truly make good knives better. I respect your practicality. Oh yeah, and just to stay relative to this thread, I like the Mini -Cyclone ZDP.

I ,for one, applaud Kershaw for what they are trying to do in the production knife market. As Thomas stated, the intent is to deliver a higer quality knife for a reasonable sum of money. As long as the company strives to do just that, I will be a loyal customer. My EDC is a Junkyard Dog II and I just love it. I know many have commented on the geometry of the clip and blade which ,rightfully so, is personal opinion based on individual taste and preference.

There will always be a great number of us who prefer to use the knife as it is out of the box. You can consider us the uniformed, uneducated masses when it comes to proper blade thickness and profile if you prefer. You know what they say, ignorance is bliss.:)

Hey, Got that Shun Birds Beak today. Heck this is the nicest kitchen knife since buttered bread. I don't see any folder here though. But I do see a great little user for more than just the kitchen. I'm thinking I'll sew me a nice horizontal carry sheath for this one here shortly.. :D This could be a very nice EDC in its own right in my opinion. Once I got it and looked it over it instantly reminded me of the little knives the natives in Dillingham Alaska used for skinning out their Moose and for just about anything else including cutting up their dinner. Little bird beaks knifes with blades no bigger than their index was all I ever saw in their hands whether they were in their backyard after a kill or at ocean side with a mess of salmon.

Put a flat handle and a lanyard hole on the handle with this same blade and you have a real winner for folks wanting a thin fixed blade EDC Thomas.

sorry for the thread tangent....
but yeah Steve, those factory edges on the Shun series are very impressive.....
about 2 yrs ago , before I truly became a "knifenut" my friend who works at Carraba's chain (he's been a cook "forever") showed me his kitchen knife collection and the Shuns (he had 3 of them including Alton's Angle) were all he would talk about....I remember reading one of Thombrogan's posts about the factory edge angle.....I am caliper-less.....I remember it being "breathtakingly" sharp.... on par if not sharper than my factory burgundy lam zdp189 Calypso Jr. ;)

Guess what arrived this morning? Pretty darn fast delivery if you ask me. My first impressions are very good. As reported the fit and finish are wonderful. The action is smooth and the assist works great. It’s just way too much fun to open. It also is held closed very well. I don’t see any accidental opening happening very easily. I tried shaking dropping and what ever else I could think of to get it to open, and it didn’t.

The lockup is solid. I think they got it perfect and the balance of ease to unlock is right on. In fact with the design I think a chance of twisting and moving the lock over to accidentally unlock with your grip is unlikely.

My first thought was it was pretty wide. My measurements, 4 ¼x1 1/2x1/2 closed, but it really isn’t. A Calypso Jr. is 4 1/16x1 1/2x7/16. The Cyclone has an edge 3 1/8 long, pretty darn good blade to handle ratio. I also thought the Cyclone was kind of heavy, but I’ve carried it all day and the Cyclone is one of the most comfortable carrying knives I’ve ever had, front right pocket. I had to keep checking that it was still there.

The edge is polished and sharp, it appears to be slightly convexed to me. The blade grind is a flat grind, and doesn’t seem to be overly thick, about the same as a Camillus EDC I have. Even though I’m also one of the thinner is better guys, I have thinned all my knives except a few, even my SAKs and above referred to Caly. Jr. I am going to leave it as is for now, no regrinding. I’m going to carry and lightly use this Cyclone. I want to keep this near new so who ever wants to see it can get a fair look at it, there are many other reports on how ZDP performs anyways. Give me some time to figure out how I’m going to get the passaround together for the Cyclone. I’m not as quick as Thomas is. :)

Thanks Thomas for the Cyclone, I’m going to hate to be without it during the passaround. Not only is it fun to use it’s a real joy to carry.

Hey, I just got mine and the speedsafe seems pretty pokey, in fact it doesn't open all the way up about 30% of the time, depending on the position I'm holding the knife. Does anyone else have this problem? I tried loosening the pivot screw as far as possible while still maintaining tight lock-up. It's nowhere near as quick as my old Avalanche, and I don't know why that would be. It's a real drag on a knife I expected to love!

That doesn't sound right. Mine fires open rather quickly in any position. And I didn't do anything to the pivot on mine.

Are you sure you have it turned on? Mine also fires the blade out very well haven't had a missfire yet.

well I turned the speedsafe off & notice that something is rubbing, there is a lot of friction as the blade approaches locking into place. That's where the problem is, I'll have to disassemble it tomorrow & see what's going on. Meanwhile I barely touched the back of my thumb to the edge while messing with it, and I've been bleeding ever since. Sharp sharp sharp!

Allrighty, who wants to play with this? Send me an email to dbtoe@hotmail.com Doing so means you’ve read and agree to all terms and rules listed here and at http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=262872
I’m sorry but only for Con US addresses.
Put Cyclone passaround in the subject of your email.
Send me your BFC nick, real name, address, and phone number.
This is for evaluation no testing or doing anything to damage the knife keeping it in like new condition for the next person.
You will post your honest opinions of the Cyclone in this thread.
You will send the Cyclone to the next person with in a week of receiving it.
I reserve the right to refuse sending the Cyclone to anyone for any reason.

If this passaround goes well I’m thinking of doing it again with a twist.
Hint: Krein.

Is anyone else having problems with their speedsafe? I discovered that if I loosen the handle screws (not the pivot screw) then the blade jumps out nicely, but (a) the blade is no longer centered when closed and (b) the lock-up is a little shaky. This is really bumming me out! Any suggestions?

fishface, sounds like you need to give Warranty a call, the knife sounds off. Sorry for the issue.
