Brief Review of the Necker

Can anyone tell me whether the BK11's sheath is set up to accept a TekLok? I'm not likely to carry something that size as a necker, but it looks like it would make a great small belt knife.

Bob,
The sheath for the BK11 is set up to accept the MINI TEK LOK. I do, however, believe that you will find the 'necker very comfortable for neck carry. Understand, this knife is meant for USING, not so much as a concealment-backup-weapon. Also, remember, the sheath is set up to be configured for tip up or tip down[nordic style] neck carry. Yes it does. ;)

UPS dropped mine off today. I will be wearing mine on duty tonight. I compared it to my arclite and found them to be of similar length if that gives someone something to compare it to. Very nicely done. It's not a dainty little knife, but I don't believe concealment will be an issue. I really like it, I could see it quickly becoming my favorite in this genre.

Thank you Ethan Becker for designing a great tool, and thanks Camillus for doing a great job producing them.

Now, don't get me wrong, since I will more than likely buy one of these, but I prefer a neck knife to be slimmer. I occasionally wear mine underneath my shirt, and a neck knife that is too big makes it look like you have some kind of stomach tumor. :)

Overall, this is a great looking knife, and I'm sure you guys will sell a buttload of them. But, please consider making a slimmer and pointier version. Maybe a warncliffe too.

Now Danbo, it ain't the neck knife that makes it look like you got some kind of stomach tumor......:D :D :D

Hey Danbo! Mongo's right - you could wear a BK-9 under your shirt and you would be hard pressed to even notice it!!!!
 :D I think you should just go ahead and get one and not worry about it.

Huh... what is tip DOWN neck carry?

That confuses me... I am really missing something here.

Thanks :)

It's very similar to handle up carry :D

Like a vertical belt knife carries. Only 'round your neck.

Thanks for the clarification, but I still am missing something (not too bright, me.)

So... I assume the sheath still covers the edge, which means that the handle is sticking up... that would mean that the attachment point of the cord/necklace would pivot near the midpoint or lower portion of the balance point -- what's to keep it from flopping left or right?

Also, how do you deploy it? Sounds like I'd uppercut myself pulling it out :D

Thanks again,

-j

Hey Guys....

First a Great Big heartfelt THANKS for the Kind Words about the Necker...

I just got back in town from Tennessee 3 days at Smokey Mountain Knife Works where I got to meet a bunch of good folks and a week at our cabin in Monroe County building roads for the new homeplace...Lots of Machete work to go along with the chainsaw & Mr. Garland's EXPERT dozer work !

I am gonna start with Biogon and work backwards.... If you wear a loose T shirt or floppy outside the pants Hawaian the tip up carry is quick and handy... I usually wear buttonned shirts without a tie so it is handier to carry the knife handle up. This carry was and is used by many a nordic type and some native americans.. .. Advantages include not having to disrobe in the winter time every time you want your knife and it is almost as quick to reach in (knife facing away from the strong hand) grabbing the handle lifting and flipping the knife over and pulling the knife down and out.....It may sound complex but it takes but a moment to learn and it is plenty quick....

Danbo....

The Necker weighs but 2-1/2 ounces and is very flat sooo...it is not very tumor like at all....I tried hard to get a package that was as useful as possible ...light....strong ...and as comfy to wear and handle as I could make it..... If you try one I think you will enjoy it ...

Gotta Run out for a couple hours but will be back on later tonight or tomorrow morning.......Thanks Again

All Best....

Ethan

Well, raise my rent!

Ethan

I wish I had known that. I live in Knoxville. My parent's property touches Monore County. That is some beautiful land out there.

I really like the necker. Great job on the design. Now if I can just talk you into designing a folder. ;)

Hey Shootist.....

I sure am glad that you like your Necker ! One of the great things about these PC thingys is instant feedback !! I know from my day job that people flat quit writing snail letters...good, bad, or indifferent !

I hope you find your Necker a worthy and constant companion. BTW have you tried the handle up option and if so how do you like it ?

I noticed your Knoxville location... Our place is very close to Chilhowee Dam
on Mt. Pleasant Road.... Overlooking Half Way Town to be exact-just west of Mulberry Creek. If there is prettier country in this world, I have not seen it.

And a word to Mick....

I have been carrying some form of this blade pretty regulary for several years now and I gotta tell you that even with a Doan magnesium/ferrocerium bar, Photon, and a fairly large compass on a separate paracord it is a comfortable carry....And it is always handy no matter what I am wearing......My first decent knife purchased at summer camp in Minnesota(age 11 ?) was a puuko designed to be carried around the neck. I, of course, had no concept at the time and wondered why the dangley "belt" loop instead of a conventional, stable, wide belt loop !

Please give one a try, I really think you will find a Necker an extremely useful friend when venturing out and about !!!

All Best...

Ethan

Shootist - how does the B11 compare to the Arclite, now that you've had it a couple days? I gave my Arclite away and was going to replace it, but what are its relative merits compared to the Becker? Thanks, FF5

I just got my BK-11 last week, everyone may have one by now.

I was impressed how much knife Mr. Becker designs into a package (almost) the same size as my benchmade tether knife. The benchmade is wonderfully lightweight, but its been staying at home since the bk-11 arrived?

PS,
All this talk about the smokies is making me home sick. I only get back once a year for a few days, if I am lucky.
