Bring back finish of G10 after checkering

I'm having a set of folders made with black G10. After checkering, the G10 turned gray and we want to bring back the finish to original. What are your suggestions? Petro or silicone lube spray, or something else?

We do not want to use a coating. I was thinking that there must be a lubricant that will absorb into the G10 material, restore finish, but not break it down.

Try a test piece with some wd-40 first. It supposedly contains natural oils. I tried some Rain-X on fiberglass once (light coat), it really brought up a shine, but as far as breakdown I can't say. Try a test piece and let us know.

I'm pretty sure WD-40 is some sort of fish oil base?

(edit)

D'oh...urban legend. It's mostly Stoddard solvent.

Just out of curiosity, (bear in mind I have no checkering experience) but would wrapping the checkering head in sandpaper polish the bevels of the checkering and bring the color back? I have been wanting to checker a handle, have the tool and heads, but no opportunity yet.

WD-40 will bring back the shine but the oils in your hand will draw it out. Buffing will also work, but the finish is more "plastic" feeling in my opinion. Some carved G-10 is really awesome with buffing. If you want to just bring back the color and shine, I use danish oil. It will work about the same as WD-40 or gun oil but will last longer after it's dry.

I'm not terribly in the know about G10, but I know that acetone and other solvents can be used to put a shine on freshly machined acetal parts or other plastics. It's possible there is a decent solvent that will put some shine on the checkered G10.

What about some type of paste wax? Ren wax or carnauba? My experience with the oils is that they need to be reapplied regularly. The wax may last a little longer.

Just a thought.
