Bring back LMIW sheaths!

maybe........two $12 pouches on a $38 azwelke CGFBM sheath, holds 10m of paracord and 6 total pockets. The black paracord loops allow for sling carry or run your belt through them for a quick and dirty drop leg carry.

The last time I spoke to Spec Ops they were in R&D for a longer sheath. I imagine they are working double time trying to keep the guys in the sandbox in gear.

That's a pretty solid setup. I really like what you did to make it a drop leg. Thanks for the link to those pouches. Al makes great sheaths too! Still, there is something to be said for having a thicker belt-loop, an option for a nylon legstrap w/ buckle, and molle backing w/ attachments.

I like the idea of replacing the insert in the LMIW sheaths with one of his taco style sheaths.

Aside from setup, is there anything else special about them? Why doesn't someone else try and make them? If someone posts up some more pics I will take them to a super duper sewer (Mom :D ) and see what might be involved. If the materials aren't too exotic, all you need is a good sewing machine and a plan. Once you got the hang, it would just be time and materials, and with the demand the way it is... hmmmmm....

materials are brutally expensive. It cab cost twice as much in denim to make a pair of pants than it does to buy them made in china (or more). Cordura is not cheap, and it would take hours to make it. Account for raw materials cost and assume your making 7.50$/hour and it gets very very expensive very fast. The modular sheaths from spec ops are very simple by comparison with less going on in the back and far less in the front, they are basically 2 sheets of fabric, a trim, and 2 simple straps at the top. This set up is multiple straps, multiple sheets, multiple pockets, multiple trims, etc etc. It's hard to make something like this profitable without having the cost get to far out of hand, especially when companies like spec ops are producing seemingly similar products for sub 30$, increasing your markets expectation for similarly low costs.

Exactly.

Just because there are a vocal few here who would pay more for a LMIW sheath does not mean there are enought of those customers to create a stable and profitable customer base. Under-capitalized small manufacturing businesses have a real problem climbing up the demand curve to get to a point where the economy of scale kicks in and they can sell the product at a price the market will bear and still make a profit.

This is exactly why I think it would behoove us to contact LMIW (Charlie and Beth, right?) and see if they would consider doing another run, or coming back altogether if we could guarantee them X amount of business at Y price. I was thinking about creating some polls to find out what price people felt was reasonable, then creating a thread and taking 'pre-orders' to see if we could generate enough money for them.

When I started this thread I thought about turning it into a poll. That's a great idea. It should definitely be in the general knife section and links to the poll should be posted in subforums. I definitely like your ideas.

The sheath looks great... I'm in! (probably for a couple)
I would pay extra for quality.. but I can understand how people might see the similarities with Spec Ops sheaths.

Wow! You have got the quite the kit setup there! I love it! Now we just gotta get you a Busse to fill out that Footlong!

P.S., what is the flashlight? Looks pretty nifty!

Flashlight is a maxpedition thing ,runs on a single AA LED, Busse those who know me , know I had many.....Sold 'em for the $$$ I like 'em but out of my budget.....Had both FBM & BWM and both went down the road for the $$ and Junglas does all I need.
Thx though :D

Fair nuff, and you're welcome. How about the little sharpening rod/knife steel thing. What is that?

Texastony, that is a solid setup and a perfect example of why the LMIW sheaths are so functional; you've got an entire survival kit on your belt at all times without taking up precious belt space.

Thanks for taking the kit apart and showing us everything that can fit into the sheath.

LMIW inspired sheath that I will be offering for all bussekin as well as fiddleback forge machetes (as pictured)!

Now I know I don`t participate much on these forums, but I am quite fonds of blades and their tools. LMIW is the supreme in nylon sheathing, just like I think Hedgehog is for leather. I had put a order for 4 LMIW pieces last November, but too late it seems....I`ve spoken to Charlier and Beth a few times up to a couple months ago and their plan was to sell the business ... it was imminent apparently. Like most here suspect, my view on the problem is that they didn`t charge enough for their sheaths. Hand-made Long-John for $65 ? Maybe from China at $1.25 an hour, but not here. No wonder it wasn`t worth it for them to keep working like crazies....They probably got sick at just looking at a sewing machine.....I made them an offer for $500 for 2 sheaths and it wasn`t good enough.

I`ll give`em a shout..
