Bringing your work home, well in the house anyways.

I'll hand sand sitting on the couch...

Me too, that's how I spilled Mobil1 on the carpet :o
I am starting to wonder how many knifemakers have ADD.

I think it goes with the territory. Then again, one of the symptoms of schizophrenia is long periods of repetitive, seemingly mindless action, which brings us back to hand-sanding :p
So basically, most of us are just plain crazy.

Since we've moved on to psychology...

Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean no ones out to get you.

Back on topic, I was actually surprised at how many makers are doing work in the house. At least I'm "normal". lol

I noticed a lot of you mention the cold, for me living in AZ it's the heat. As of yet no AC in the shop, and I don't see myself doing a ton of work out there this summer when it's 115 outside.

High tomorrow is gonna be 93, and it's not even May yet.

I need to get a bunch of blades to the finishing stage in the next 6 weeks or so and then hibernate!

Hey Terrio, props for the Megadeth reference on your site.

"BlackToothGrin" made me smile inside when I read it.

In my previous comment about Paranoia I almost wrote "If I know I'm going crazy, I must not be insane" but I figured no one would get the reference.

I hand sand inside. Its too blooming hot in the summer to hand sand outside. Sometimes i sweat so much outside that my hands get slippery and I start to patina the steel while sanding! besides hand sanding is miserable enough.

There is knife stuff all over my dining room table right now.

I like to wrap handles and hand sand inside while watching a movie.

Thanks  I didn't think much about it when I chose that name for my "tactical" knives, I just thought it was cool. But I was pleasantly surprised by how many knifemakers and knife fans totally get the reference :D

Back on topic, sort of:
As for chips in the house: little pieces will stick to the bottom of shoes then come off in the carpet. I just take off my shoes when coming in.

That's a good point. It's also a good idea to wear an apron in the shop, or leave your filthy greasy sparkly dusty workshirt there when you come into the house. Steel/G10/micarta/wood dust on the couch and whatnot is not good for relationships or innocent people's health.

I wondered this afternoon what kind of damage the 01/1095/micarta/stag/oak dust I was brushing into the trash might do to my lungs. I really need to devise a dust collection system, and clean my shop more often.:D

We sometimes joke about being members of the "Black Booger Society" but it's actually not funny at all.
Renowned knifemaker Ed Caffrey had to have surgery on his lungs to remove some gunk caused by years of inhaling steel and stag dust. Luckily, it wasn't cancer, but it was still very serious, cost him a ton of money and put him out of work for several months.

A respirator (not just a paper dust mask) is essential when grinding anything. Clean-up is best done with a shop-vac, not a rag or brush. A box-fan with a furnace filter taped to it, directly behind the grinder, helps somewhat. There are some good threads around detailing DIY dust-collection systems.

I have a respirator, and a shop vac (which has seen it's better days). It's just remembering to put the respirator on that gets me.

Black Booger Club, maybe that's where the BlackToothGrin comes from!

90% of my work is done inside the house....lol.

You guys would not believe the ghetto setups that I have to get stuff done and out the door. I don't have a shop, and have not had to have a shop for the short time that I've been doing this. The house still looks like a house, and has just a bit of knife paraphernalia around.

(Girlfriend read this just now and said "That's a damn lie...there are knives in every room!")

Lol.

If you live in a hot area, you can still wall off a small area and install a window air conditioner.
If you live in a cold area, you can still wall off a small area and plug in a radiator heater.
If you live in a temperate zone, you can wall off a small area and install both- along with a sink that drains on the ground outside.
Or, you can burn up and sweat, freeze your gonads off, and use the sink in the house.
Lemme see..........

I have a little craftsman 2x42 that I drag out on the porch now and again. I have a Coote on a little portable table thing I set up. You'd laugh if you saw it.

Just finished some sharpening at the computer desk. Thanks for all the responses. Again, I was surprised to see that I wasn't alone, thought I was weird!

Every knife i make starts off in the house and ends up in the house lol. It is not uncommon for me to have a stack of handle blocks on the counter, or 8 or 9 profiled blanks sitting with them. I occasionally do some hand sanding inside, but always do glue up and waxing/hand polishing inside.
