I am thinking about getting one of these, I need thoughts and photos, if anyone has them on this knife and the sheath that comes with it.

Thanks,
RickJ

pitdog has a beautifully modded version...

but i am no help here. they do look like big, beefy blades that can take a real beating though.

They are not much liked by British trrops, who generaly prefer to use their own blades.

The new ones are a lump. They come in two flavours. Big lump with wooden handle, and big lump with synthetic fiber handle. If you want something you are unlikely to break then I'd say go for it. If you want a cutting instrument then avoid like pox.

The original was designed in an attempt to give some of the chopping power of a machete in a small belt knife format. The prototype dates back to around 1960 and belonged to Wilkinson Sword. If you follow along the time line you can see it becoming increasingly less sophisticated. The stag handles got dumped first, and then the guard and handle shape underwent several revisions. About the only saving grace is that the original clip point got dumped in favour of the drop point. However, by far the most significant feature is the grind. Over time it has morphed into the spasticated nasty offering it is today, with bad bevels. Obviously, Wilkinson Sword hasn't got anything to do with them any more, and hasn't for a long time. They are banged out up north, and depending on where you get it either it comes in a basic folded leather sheath or an equally basic offering in ballistic nylon. Prices vary widely here. I see them going in some place for two or more times the price as elsewhere for exactly the same offering.

The one Pitdog has is older. I can't pin exactly which year it was made but they are hard to come by now – not rare – but will probably take a rummage. Look carefully at it compared with the ones made now. His is much better.

The one pitdog has is the Wilkinson Sword D pattern(2 handle bolts, no longer made).
The one you can find online are as baldtaco discribes, thick heavy non-cutters.

Mine was actually made by Rodgers of Sheffield, England.

Here it is with some other knives for comparison....

It is a truly bombproof knife that is great around the camp but it does not really compare with newer knives such as the Chopweiler, which beats it in every department !

I will not be buying the knife after all, I've seened them on several post and thought there might be a cult following but guess not.

Thanks,

I could tell you what I think or I could show you. Both of these knives were bought at the same time four years ago. One I use, and one I don't. Actually, I have two of the MOD knives. I bought them for $49 for both shipped so I am not really complaining to much, but they just don't feel that good in my hand.

I don't think you could ever break one as these are .237'' thick. They came about as sharp as a bowling ball. I never even tried to sharpen them as I knew I would never used them as soon as I handled them.

I am kind of liking this digital camera thing my sister has. I might have to buy one after she and her family leave this weekend.

Here you can see how thick it is.

I have a MoD survival knife and decided to mod it a bit.

Didn't like the way the knife felt when I first got it but now it feels like I always thought it should.
