The UK is putting in tough blade-length laws: carrying anything over 3" blade length in a public place "without a good reason" may get you a jail sentence. In response to stabbing deaths, of course.

They're holding a "knife amnesty" for the next few weeks, where folks can drop off their unwanted over-length knives in bins, for police disposal. Preferably, the knives will be wrapped in brown paper first.

I think it's ridiculous. Utterly ridiculous.

But rooting through the bins (or watching British E-bay) might unearth a few good deals over the next while.:D

Yup, they are big on "Banning" stuff in the UK and the crown colonies. A recent poll showed most of the Brits don't feel well protected over there. I guess you can always put some rocks in an old sock and whack the bad guy.

Oh, Happy Birthday to QueenE. I hope the Royal Guards took her and her hubby out to the local pub for fish and chips and a pint to celebrate the grand occasion!

They're calling them "offensive knives". Hell, one of them in that pic could easily been used as a kitchen knife. And there's a khuk! I bet they're probably just going to junk them.

Maybe they'll sell em surplus to the states!

*edit - I spoke too soon about the kitchen knife. Thanks for that second article DGG.

Yep it is ridicoulos, tottaly, 2 ex. policmen I spoke to yesterday were laughing about it. {they sell antique knives & swords nowadays.} in thier frustration.

If someone wants to injure or kill someone , they dont say to themselves " I better not carry a knife to do it though, because thats illegal"

the lethal weapon is the human mind.

Sadley, Rumour has it some styles of weapons may be banned by president Blair Hopefully not kukris though.

I would be so gutted. :barf:

I'm sure that will put an end to crime in the UK. All we need to do is pass a law and the problem disappears. Simple, huh?

How do we end up with these idiots in power?

They just pander to the newspapers & the out of touch blue rinse voters who think the goverment is doing something about crime.

As Blair his wife & half the cabinet were criminal lawyers they must actualy know the truth.

Which shows what a sham it is.

Spiral, I feel for you, and have seen just this type of British woman right here in my town. I was a member of a local club and one of the senior members was a 70 year old english expatriot. She has lived here for 40 years but is a supposed expert on all things English.

She is incredibly hoplophobic and stupid to boot. I mentioned to her that I had read on the BBC web site that the english were arming police in Nottinghamshire with S&W revolvers. She flat out told me I was wrong, and that this was not happening and would never happen. I then printed out a pic from the web site showing the bobby with a Smith 686 on his belt, and she told me that the BBC was notoriously unreliable. No matter what proof I showed her she denied it. As much as I would like to think so she was far from senile. She just hated guns and knives of all kinds. One visit to my home for an event and she never spoke to me again. This is the kind of stupidity that is endemic in England, but is on the verge of happening here if the anti-gunners had their way.

Just ban crime and it will go away. First handguns, then rifles and shotguns, then BB and pellet guns, then toy guns, and now knives.

Nothing personal, but how far the great English have fallen! From the heirs of the mantle of Western Civilization, Britannia rules the waves and the sun never sets on the English empire, leaders of the free world, to a 4th rate psuedo third world country infested by freeloading parasites from the middle east seeking free goodies, run by socialists who tax everything that moves. Hey! Kind of like where the US will be in 25 years...:rolleyes: Seriously.

Now tell me what will they do when everything is banned and crime continues to rise? Idiots.

I only have one word to say, Norm:"AMEN".

my 17 year old son has a bunch of keys on a long nylon loop with a maglight AA at the other end. Kid who carries a knife to school every day doesn't like him and complains to school that he is frightened of him "because he carries a knife".
Teachers have to deal with complaint ask son when he last had a knife in school. Son says 3 days ago (a leatherman) to use in art. Threatened with expulsion. Told not to bring torch into school - possible weapon. Source of other kid's knife? My son sold it to him. I suppose he can always strangle the kid with his lanyard.

Oh no! Let's ban screwdrivers.... and hammers....
and steel! and then... bronze...
And hard plastic and rope and chairs
and then we can all live in houses made of pillows and sit in bean bag chairs all day, and eat jello!
Oh..... whatever. Those silly blokes need a reality check.

Unbelievable. Really, can't believe it. Spiral, I'll "store" your collection for you. Just cuz I'm a pal and all. Real cheap too. LOL

Hobbyist. That was an expellable offense even when I was in high school. You can't bring a knife to school. Never could. Nothing new there. Now the flashlight, Jeez, they even let you bring those on planes. Wha how?

Latest figures were 40% of 12- 18 year olds carry knives....when? They are in school a lot... Idiot son didn't think leatherman was banned knife as uses for Art classes in school (art teacher backed him up he's used it in her lessons about a year and they give out craft knives).

Yep our laws are a mess. And the people who make them live in mansions surronded by armed bodygaurds.

I just hope no one gets killed with a kukri. Or they will probably ban them.

Thanks Andy! LOL Actualy I would certanly destroy them rather than surrender them. I might give them to a museam if I new they would display them.

Or weld them into a giant sculpture perhaps?

Who knows? I hope it doesnt happen.

I would cry.

"Weapons cause crime like flies cause garbage."

I guess you can't pass a law against the decline of a civilization, or they might actually be on to something.

Or do the laws they pass cause its decline?

"All that is necessary for evil to succeed is for good men to do nothing."

Adios, UK.

You know, gents, they're not banning Swiss Army Knives, or knives that are being used for a reasonable purpose. Chef's knives, for e.g., and I doubt that anyone would get fined etc. for using a khukuri to chop wood. Nor do they really expect that criminals will give up their cutlery - just the thuggish teen element that's mostly carrying because of peer pressure.

There are places in the world, e.g. Darfur, and currently Iraq, where citizens need to (or at least, would be wise to) arm themselves to stay safe from feral humans. In these places, the sovereign state has imploded, and isn't meeting it's first responsibility to its population - to keep them largely free from threat of violence. Needing to be armed while going about daily life is really a marker that there's something truly bad going on in the society, that's generating that human-on-human danger.

In sovereign states that are basically functional, that shouldn't be a need - keeping the population essentially safe is what Thomas Hobbes famously thought was the first and most basic responsibility of governments towards their citizens.

If I need to carry a dagger to go to the office, or to go out to dinner .. maybe I'm living in the wrong place.

Is the govt. out of control here and there and probably everywhere? Of course, so what are we to do about it? We can vote...........out of a city of 500,000 only 40,000 turned out to vote on raising taxes..........again. People are content to just sit back and enjoy their Monday night football, baseball, basketball, racing and beer. Until the hammer drops on their little world. Then they scream about the injustices of the world. Well, if you don't like it, do something about it before it's a problem? We all need to take responsibility for our actions and live with the consequenses of our actions. But too often today we pass off our inadequacies as a problem with society, family, etc, etc. It couldn't possibly be my fault................I mean really.................
