I am going to purchase one of these ...and I have being weighing my options & what the BRK&T will do vs. what I will do with it...:)
Golok Specs:

Overall length: 16.775 Inches
Blade Length: 11.1 Inches
Cutting Edge: 10.775 Inches
Steel: 1095 @ 57 rc
Steel Thickness: .224 Inch
Weight: 17.125 Ounces

Machete Specs:

Overall Length: 19 Inches
Blade Length: 13.975 Inches
Blade Steel: 1095
Blade Thickness: .120 Inch
Weight: 15.250 Ounces

Does the Golok come with a sheath ? I love the sheath the Machete comes with it looks awesome,Mike and the Gang did a great job on that... I am leaning more towards the Golok due to it's thickness...but wanted your opinion...I am only going to buy one and I am realy liking the Golok for camping chores....(did not wanna jack the previous golok thread for my questioning).

I like both as well. I think the machete will be a better overall chopper. Even though it is lighter due to its thinness, the extra weight will compensate for this. Ontario machetes are still heavier and thicker than other brands. The golok might be better for wood only applications. The blade shape and width of the machete appeal to me more.

I think you would be OK with either choice. The materials for both products are well chosen.

I do think the handle design on the Golok is a bit better, but tough to say personally as I haven't handled the machete.

The golok does come with a sheath.

I have never handled either, I had just did a little research and just compared the two as to which one I would like to own in the near future...just asking others opinions...Thanks for the answers & opinions....

Somehow, both look like brush-clearing short swords. I love my B R knives, but for what those big things cost, you could get one heck of a nice proper knife - and a selection of imported sheet steel machetes that I'd feel better using for their intended purpose. It seems you always ding a machete - unknown nail, etc, in the wood - or a wayward whack on a rock, etc. "Oh well!" for the cheapie - real tears if it was a B R! Just my NSHO!

I now have both of them, and overall I prefer the Golok. They cut very similarly, despite the differences in the blades, but the handle on the Golok is darn close to perfection.

Of course, I'm probably prejudiced, as I've been using the Golok since it first came out, and love it. It's the best large blade knife I've ever used - and I've used a bunch of them.

My advice: Get the Golok! You won't be sorry, I promise!

I am in the same situation as you. I pre ordered a machete and now that I see the Golok can be purchased I am having a very hard time making a decision. I am leaning towards the Golok bacause most of my woods time is in the northeast and I understand that the golok has the uper hand when it comes to hardwoods. I also think the machete might be a tad long for what I would use it for. Not much grass and tropical vegetation on the Northeast. I will let you know when i finally decide, I will only buy one of them.

It really does depend on your intended area of use.

Machetes are favored in S. America & Africa where a lighter faster blade like the machete is more useful on typical greens & vines & brush.

Golok type blades are better in places like SEAsia where you would encounter more woody vegetation including canes & bamboos.

Your choice should depend on vegetation to be faced if you want a serious chopper, otherwise, go with the one you find more eye-appealing for you.

I ordered the golok as soon as ads appeared. I've already got about a dozen machetes with different blade lengths and shapes. I've also got some heavy choppers, but nothing like a full tang golok. Looks perfect. I'll probably pass on the machete.

..With the input I have seen so far and knowing my Area I will pick up a Golok in the future and pass on the Machete since I own several anyways..Thanks Guys!!

Whereabouts are you in TX? TX has just about every type of environment in it somewhere.

Most of the places I've been in TX coul dbe likened to FL in that there's both very light and some hard vegetation. Machetes rule for light vegetation, but aren't so hot on hard vegetation (thinking of things like Palmettos and such).

Looking at where Goloks originate from, I'd say your deceision to go with one is the right choice. Plus, IMO, they look cooler.

I think you’re on the right track.

The Golok is a better all around tool, it will do the work of a machete but will perform much better when it comes to serious chopping tasks; is might be the perfect camp tool.

i like the fact that the tip is rounded, i had a golok from asia many years ago and it did a pretty damn good job around the garden when digging. I know that knives arent made for that purpose but i think that the design of the knife was meant to be used that way.
