BRK&T Goloks

I've had mine for quite a while and like it a lot! It's a good light chopper, and does good duty as a drawknife. I used it to trim down a bunch of 4x4 lumber when I built a shed a while back, and I've used it to cut lots of brambles and brush on our property.

I guess its all horses for courses, but I was really unimpressed when I used one of these a few months back. I have medium size hands and the handle just felt neither comfortable nor secure. In chopping ability I don't think it could hold a candle to the old Becker BK9 and I would take the Martindale Jungle Knife ahead of the Golok, despite the latter's vastly better materials and fit and finish. A shame, :(I wanted to like it since it is certainly a nice packable tool.

The golok (BRK&T style) isn't meant to be a dedicated chopper, though it can do well on smaller branches and such.

It is meant for use in clearing light brush, such as vines, bushes, small branches. For heavier chopping, get one of these -

That's a BR Forester (on the left), and it chops like the devil!

Andy, I see you, like me, have a River's Edge. Its a fantastic knife IMO. Mine is in white paper mikarta. Coincidentally, I've got exactly the same piggyback setup on mine as well!

I like the knife! I haven't had a chance to use it much yet. It's on the short list of candidates to go with me to the Snowy Range in August for a little camping trip.

Its cool because its thin bladed. Really a good bushcraft design IMO.

Looks like Bark River is releasing some Goloks... I had a prototype of one of these briefly, but it had no ground edge. I gotta say that it felt good in the hand, Mike Stewart said that he would give me one of these for the prototype I sent him. I'm looking forward to that, for sure.....

I have several BRKT protos like that - no edge, some not tempered, made as models for final dimensions and for sheath design. I would love to get the Golok proto like that! Any chance you can get that one back? I'd happily trade you a brand new shiny Golok of your choice, plus a bit, for it!

I ordered the new golok as soon as the ads went up. Can't wait to give it a try. I've wanted a full tang golok for a long time. :D

Grampa, I had sent it to Bark River to get a edge put on it. Donna and Mike called me about three times to ask if I was sure (Mike said that it was not a prototype, it is the prototype). I kept telling them that I wanted a Golok with an edge, so Mike said he would make me a new one... If that doesn't happen soon, I'll ask for it back and send it to you for a new one (no money necessary).
