Recently, Bark River Knife and Tool sent me one of their modified Ontario Model 1-18 machetes, the Knivesshipfree Machete, for testing. Having handled many knives in my lifetime, there are only a few that I have been this eager to try out. When I returned home recently, I found it waiting on my doorstep and at the next available free afternoon, I was off to do some field testing.

Immediately upon examination of the KSF Machete, one notices the subtle differences between the standard 1-18 and the customized version. First and foremost is the beautiful high polished finish of the blade and no black coating present. Coatings will prevent maximum cutting potential and therefore had to be left off the BRKT machete. Secondly is the custom palm swelled handle. Beautifully contoured, it fills the hand without being too bulky and is reminiscent of a bushcrafter blade. Also new is the slight drop point of the KSF Machete. While not offering much to the user other than a slight decrease in weight for greater swinging speed, it gives the machete a unique look.

A regular swing of the KSF machete results in deep penetration into wood.

Note the depth the blade sinks to. The full-height convex grind makes for excellent chopping ability.

The BRKT Machete has a unique feel to it. Unlike the standard 1-18, the KSF Machete has a shortened blade but lengthened cutting edge where the unsharpened choil usually is. This packs extra cutting ability into a shorter blade. (A WORD OF WARNING! Having used machetes for some time now, I recommend a regular user of machetes take time to use the machete without choking up on the grip. Either that or wear gloves when using it. An accidental touch along the convex edge will surely draw blood.) Longer than the 12” model and shorter than the 18” model, the KSF Machete reaps the benefits of both.

I am never going to perform a test on a knife that isn’t realistic. You’ll never see me in a basement with a mask over my face in “controlled conditions.” I believe in true dirt time testing and this KSF Machete, as it has been called, was up for the task. I figured a day out in the woods clearing the landing to one of my favorite private and hidden canoeing areas would be an appropriate test. No shortage of green vegetation exists here and some rather annoying briars and blackberry bushes needed clearing. I figured I would clear it out now before I stepped on it with a sandaled foot later.

After a half hour of chopping and wiping clean of the blade with water, the Barktario was still shaving sharp at the end of the day. There were only a few spots of surface rust but this was easily removed with 0000 steel wool. My other machetes from Ontario that are also 1095 carbon steel suffer from occasional rusting but this is not a concern of mine. A machete is a working tool, it isn’t a showy or flashy knife. My machetes have character and I’m willing to use them. In some countries, like my father’s Philippines homeland, machetes are carried throughout childhood working in the field. They’re trusted and used hard. Rust is common but easily removed and not really an issue in my eyes.

Overall, the BRKT Modified KSF Machete offers improved performance over the standard 1-18 model. The only improvement I could suggest for this machete would be the addition of a forward lanyard hole. This would allow the user to attach a lanyard, securely grab the handle yet have enough play to aid in snap cutting with it. Without the lanyard hole, the user can use a simple girth hitch to attach some 550 cord. As with all BRKT products, a multitude of handle slab choices are available. Most importantly, the BRKT warranty covers the blade and sheath for life! However, the BRKT warranty doesn’t cover the loss of extremities such as fingers and toes so be careful. This KSF machete is meant to cut and it will no matter what is put before it so exercise caution using this absolutely amazing tool!

1. What is the actual blade length?

2. Will Bark River offer it on a wide scale so all can get one?

Thanks,
RickJ

I'll measure it tomorrow for you. Knivesshipfree.com is the only place BRKT has sold them to. They can be purchased there.

Awesome, next purchase for me, I do believe.
Knives ship free says blade length is 13.975 inches, and priced very well too, 150 and up depending on your handle preference.
Hmm, just saw it's a modified ontario, I like that its 1095 steel but really it's 5 times the price of an ontario.
On top of that theres the whole issue with Ontario/RAT cutlery, I have to think this over some more.

What came with it? A shoulder Strap or belt or did you add that to the sheath?

Thanks,
RickJ

Great review - this looks like an excellent purchase and something the community has been hoping for, for quite a while - a high quality production machete....

Kevin,

Is it just me - or do you look a little maniacal in that photo? If we took out the wood in the picture - I think you may get a knock on the door by local authorities. ;)

Talfuchre,

I reviewed that photo after I took it and laughed. I knew someone would comment about it so just for fun, I decided to see how ridiculous I could make myself look in a couple more. Also, the day I tested it, the temps peaked at 88 degrees so what I did next was inevitable.

So.....for your viewing pleasure I submit the following very ninja like photo. You will have to look carefully as my ninja skill of invisibility has been honed over the years and I may be hard to find.

Oh I see - somebody threw a $180 machete at you and you caught it with your teeth. That is skillful!

cocomen69,

Ding ding ding! It sure is but it is a bit old. The scat was somewhat dry and had spiderwebs on it.

Thanks Kev for doing the review.

The sheath does come with the machete. The sheath is made by Sharpshooter Sheath Systems, so you know it is top notch.

It was quite a project!

Does the sheath come with the Baldric carry, or just with the beltloop, and the baldric attachment is sold separately?

Just the beltloop--the baldric is available seperately from all Sharpshooter dealers

Is this a a new design or are they regrinding ontario machete blades to this profile as the basic stock? I have always liked the green micarta on Bark River Knives. Does anyone know where to get it. For that price it might be worth it to regrind your own if you are handy. The sheath is very nice for another 70.00 or so. Loosearrow

Kevin,

Great review, thanks! I own mostly Trams, but was looking at getting a 12" Ontario soon (I was going to wait until I heard more about the BRKT and Siguy's project....). How would you describe the difference between the Ontario and Bark River?

Is this machete an actual ontario machete that BRKT modified and is only selling by way of KSF? I did not see this machete on the BRKT web-site. The concept is a little confusing to me. Did BRKT actually design this machete or modify an exsisting brand? In any event I think it really looks sweet and would like to get my hands on one.
