BRKT Bravo-1 or Spyderco Dayhiker?

You're the second person to tell me that the Canadian Special is a great knife outdoor user knife. I'll have to add that to my ever growing list.

My Bravo 1 is my go to outdoors knife. I like everything about it. If you search the web, you should be able to get the black micarta handled Bravo 1 for $140-150.

If you want a compromise between the Canadian Special and the Bravo-1, look at the Wet Environment Knife, the second BRK&T for the Marines, in 12C27 to handle corrosive environments. It's based on a bushcraft blade rather than a hunting knife.

BRKT's entire "Canadian" line is excellent, from the Mikro Canadian on up.

Esav,

Interesting. I go to their site occasionally to find updates but I think they don't really update it very much!

I'm not one to criticize, since I don't know any better, but I would have imagined a "wet environment" knife would have more structural barriers to slipping forward or backward, especially given that polished handle materia... something more like a Hossom handle.

I like my B1 a lot... I'd actually much prefer this hidden-tang/fully enclosed handle construction of the Wet Enviro... do you happen to know their rationale for the not-a-lot-of-guard on the front and rear?

You won't find the latest and greatest on the BRKT site. You need to check out the big dealers like DLT Trading and KnivesShipFree. They carry hundreds of knives in most current models.

I don't know the rationale for the sleek handle profile. That style works for me since I palm the handle anyway. It's more secure and it puts the blade further out. I only choke up for fine work where a secure grip is less of a concern.

Hmmm... by "palm" the handle, should I assume you mean the butt goes into the middle of the palm, with the pinky behind the butt?

I've always choked up as far as I can, for control and power, either in kitchen-knife or index-on-spine... hrmm.

I have to agree with grampa. the bravo is a good knife and really tough. However as grampa said the canadian special might not have the looks but it has a great reputation as possibly the best all around outdoor knives ever. correct me if i'm wrong but i believe it is based on the grohmann knives that are actually issued to th R.C.M.P.

It is based on the leaf-shaped blade that has been around for a long time. The "Canadian" part of the name may be a nod to the fame that Grohmann brought to this style, but the handles are different.

Edit: in the interests of full disclosure, I should say, I don't have a Canadian Special, but I do have a Grohmann Boat Knife, the military model rather than the original Grohmann handle. Extraordinary knife, and stronger than I'd realized untill I got mine. :)

biogon, my hand is fairly broad, so palming is automatic with anything but a very long handle. Even palmed, many knives still fill my hand to the ricasso.
