Ive been looking for a certain fixed blade for a while now and ive narrowed it down to these 3. I would like to call it my heavy day carry blade ;). Im looking for something more substantial than my usual edc fixxies and folders like my mini grip, delica, snody 210 and most recent score My Tom Krein TK-11 B&T that I am really enjoying. Anyway I want this blade to be in the upper range of 3-4 inches as 4 inches is my legal limit in New York I believe. The Falkniven F1 would be perfect and I would just get that but I don't want a blade that thick for this application, I don't really like thick stocks anyway, but .125-.156 seems like it will be enough. If you have any experience, recommendations or especially comparison pics please share. I am open to other Blades that fit my description if u can recommend any.

I have a Fallkniven F1 in 3G and soon will be getting Survive knives GSO 5.1 in 3V as harder user.

BRKT makes beautiful, functional blades.

I'd get it in S35VN, if you're wearing it a lot 3V and A2 will rust unless you keep it slathered in oil.

I'm sure you'll find plenty of fans of the AMS, especially in the Busse forum. I love mine but have a gunny on order to see how it does. Specs wise it seems really similar to the AMS but I couldn't find any direct comparisons to the AMS. It's also available in Elmax.

Btw, the NYC limit is 4", NYS does not have a specified limit.

AMS is a great knife. Not too big, not too little. You probably can't go wrong with any of the three you mentioned. They all get a lot of love on the forums. Let us know what you decide and how you like it after using it awhile.

I was looking at the exact same knives you are last week. I ended up going for the Survive! GSO 4.1 though. I've had a Bark River in the past and I didn't like it. Reason being I didn't like the fact the handles are not removable and I had the A2 model. It's probably not an issue, but it bothered me.

My Gunny came in yesterday. Haven't really had a chance to use it but here's some quick pics with my AMS. The AMS blade is just slightly thicker but the handles on the Gunny are much thicker than the AMS. The AMS comes in a 5oz and 4.9oz IIRC for the Gunny. I like the feel of both. If you can, get both or all 3 including the GSO, see which you like, and sell the ones you don't in the Exchange (with a Gold membership).

Here's most of my 3-4" fixed blades. Top to bottom are the RC-3 (ESEE-3 now), Gunny, AMS, Bark River Bravo Necker II, GEC H73, Busse SAR3, and Izula 2. You didn't mention the ESEE 3 but its a favorite of mine too in that range and less expensive than the other options you mentioned. It's handle is flat compared to the Gunny and AMS but it is taller. There's aftermarket handles for it that make it more contoured and longer too.

Forgot to mention, the ams doesn't come with a sheath. I got a mashed cat kydex sheath with small tecklock for it. It sits higher on the belt than the leather sheath that comes with the Gunny.

I like the Gunny, and the RC-3 (ESEE), and I have and use both. I like the Gunny a bit better, and I just keep the A2 blade clean, and/or with a light coating of mineral oil, and it is clean, and shiny.

I am a very undeceive dude one time we wer out n my friends girlfriend had to friends that wer down but I couldn't make up my mind so I ended up going home by myself that night lol

>_> yeah I'm sure that's the reason...

I rechecked the weights... The AMS was 4.9 while the Gunny was 5.0. Not that there's a huge difference.

^^^ very nice!!!

Thanks :)

I have the Gunny Hunter in 3V. It's my favorite fixed blade knife purchase of the last five years or so. I EDC in my bag, use regularly, and have had no issues with rust. NO abuse but I have done some bushcraft without any problems. great knife. I've been looking at Bark River knives for my next fixed blade purchase...as soon as I get all the spyderco's I need.
Grizz

I have the esee 4 and I really like it I guess that means I should like the esee 3 but idk I am leaning more towards the ams and that one happens to be the most expensive :/

Well, Busse raised the prices on all their knives earlier this year. The AMS was only $20 more than the Gunny when I got it. You could always get a coated AMS, strip it, and give it a ghetto satin. That way it won't be a safe queen and you won't feel bad about using it. INFI doesn't need the coating, it is very stain resistant.

My votes for the GSO 3.5, but that's just it looks more like a tool, is cheaper, lighter, and the thinnest out of that set. The other 2 are fine knives as well if you're into those styles, but they're a little thick and pricey. When it comes to something I'll carry all day, I personally prefer smaller and more nimble knives for everyday things.

Although thicker than I'd prefer, the convex of the 3V scalpel isn't bad, and it's tiny. Same with the BHK frontier first flat grind. That fast 2.5 - 3.5 inch thing is what I'm into for most of a days work either in a city or on location.
