I've enjoyed the variety and quality of many of the small custom makers that hang out around here, but I've always had a soft spot in my heart for BRKT products. My wife picked me up this Kephart Companion for an anniversary gift and I am very impressed. This knife is a great size for EDC and stout enough for serious work. It's a little over 6 3/4" long with a 3" blade which is a beefy .145" thick. The handle is nicely shaped and tapered, and feels very solid in the hand. No matter how I handle this knife, it feels very comfortable and controllable.
The pattern of this knife has an interesting history. Mike Stewart of BRKT designed this blade after a knife that Horace Kephart used as a companion to his namesake blade (hence the name
). I plan on EDC'ing this blade in my back pocket KSF sheath. The handle extends less than 2" from the top of the sheath and just reaches the top of my pocket.
Currently, this knife is a limited production 2008 Custom, but I'll bet demand will make it a regular catalog item. It's my new favorite.
