I was thinking about get my first barkie soon and I picked the northstar for my first.
Does any body have any experience in using this knife? I also heard that it does come in 12C27 Stainless, which I don't really want, is this true?
Thank all for your time in answering my q's.

You might be suprised by that 12C27 stainless steel. Even thogh I'm a carbon guy, I like that steel.

The Northstar is A2 - always!

The Mini-Northstar is 12C27 - always!

What handle material are you looking at?

Northstar is good. A lot of performance out of a relatively light knife. Weight is saved in the handle.

I love my North star,I have the 2007 version, yellow G10 scales with matching firesteel. Excellent bushcraft blade...A2 steel....

Recently got to test out my first Northstar, it's a solid design and well executed. I'm very tempted by them myself. I've never heard a bad word about BRKT's stainless, and I'm a very 'carbon' kind of guy.

Unfortunately the wedge style handles of the Northstar, like in this pic, don't work for me, my hand slips right twords that blade. :( I wish the Highland and woodland didn't have it especially.

Awesome knife..I have 2. If it means anything to you..I consider it in the Barkie trifecta...Aurora, Bravo1 and Northstar...simply the best 3 knives made in a semi factory in America, PERIOD.

When you look at the specs, 12c27 is not a complex stainless, it's basically a stainless 5160.

I have several different knives in this steel, a Barkie, a Laguiole, and a Japanese Kitchen knife made from "swedish stainless steel" so it must be something similar.

Nothing to say against it yet.

The Highland as a similar but thinner wedge shape, but it has a pronounced choil(?) that keeps your finger from sliding up onto the edge. I find the Highland more comfortable to hold.

the northstar is an awesome knife.. definately one of my favorites... i have one with osage scales and mosaic pins.... it was actually my first barkie... the one that started it all...:D

i too am also a carbon steel guy, but the 12c27 steel is good stuff.. you should give it a try...

I really like my North Star. It is definitely a high quality, very sharp, good looking and tough knife. Did I mention sharp and tough?

Ummmm, just to be clear, every Northstar ever made was made in A2. None of them have ever been made in 12C27 or any other stainless.

The Mini-Northstar is a much smaller knife that is made in 12C27, not A2. It was designed as a fixed blade EDC, not as a companion or competitor with the Northstar.

They are both great knives, but the Northstar is made in A2, and the Mini-Northstar is made in 12C27.

:)

Grampa is correct. The North Star is A-2 and the Mini North Star is 12C27. From what I understand, one of the keys to 12C27 is that it is carefully heat treated for best performance. I'm sure that Mike over at Bark River Knives is doing it right. The North Star & the Mini North Star both have their place and both are excellent knives.

I wish you the best! :)

Mike Stewart’s A2 is tops, it’s what first attracted me to Bark River.

But after testing some of his stainless steel blades I am thoroughly impressed.

Mike picks fine grained steels, and brings out the best in both high carbon and stainless.

All the blades he makes are real performers.
