Bro needs a knife

I keep telling my brother he needs to get himself a Busse/Bussekin. He may or may not go fanatical about them after his first, as I've always been the knife nut. He does hunt, and camp and fish and recognizes the vast difference between any knife he has, and the Busses I've showed him.

The one that caught his eye was my Skinny ASH-1. He actually prevented me from selling it after praising how great it is. Slung in a Steelnut sheath with fire steel loop, he said it would be his perfect "survival knife"

Ok, so although he "thinks" the Skinny is the one, he's had no exposure to any other Busse, so I'm on a quest to show him as many as possible before deciding. Trouble is, I'm not half as versed in Busse knife specs as some of you guys. I get the feeling he's going to want something around the same size as the skinny, and similar thickness.

What can I recommend in the under 7" category with a blade thickness at .20" or less? .22" is probably ok... .25" would be pushing it.

I'm going to show him a Ratweiler, but that's probably outside of what he'll want. (More like something I want though :D) Right now price isn't a factor, but I know he isn't going to want anything above $500

Easy, CABS!:D

The CABS would be a great fishing knife. It would be handy around a campsite as well.

GregS ~

:D This is about what HE wants... Not what I desperately want and am willing to max a credit card for... :D

Plus, its a bit smaller than what he's looking for.

Have him check out bussecollector.com, he can get specs and pics.

Do they pop up on the exchange often? Are those INFI? I guess we could hit up the WTB section.

yes they are infi, it's an ash with a blade that's a not as wide. very fast and comfy. yes they do pop up every now and then.

here ya go.

I suggest a Sarsquatch.

Thin(er) like a Skinny ASH, better all-around-user Ergos than an ASH, and pretty inexpensive compared to most medium/bigger Busse blades.

Agreed... Sarsquatches are great all arounders. I can't figure out why they are still so cheap on the exchange...

+1 SFNO or NMSFNO (My current fave)

The NMSFNO is a bit longer than the ASH, but for some reason, it doesn't feel much. It's a great all-around blade. If I could only have one, this would be it (at least for today). It chops well, carries well, and is quick in the hand. It's handle is very comfortable for chopping, and the NM treatment makes it nice to choke up if needed.

I had a SNFNOLE. It's a good knife, but the NMFSNO felt better balanced, and the extra length felt right.

The SARsquatch would be a good one too. (I gave mine to my cousin, but want another one badly)

The SARsquatch is quick and light, but still chops fairly well. FOR ME, the handle is much more versatile compared to the ASH.

Then there's the Tank Buster and Hell Razor that are a bit more "tactical" looking.

IMHO, if he's only going to have one, he should choose one that fills the most niches without being too heavy to carry. So, the SARsquatch might be the way to go.

Though, for 500, he could go for a DFLE and a S5. Those res-c mudders are the most comfortable handles. He would have the chopping ability of S7 in the DFLE and the edge retention of SR-101 in the S5. While Infi is better all-around steels, those two blades utilize the best traits of there respective steels in terms of intended application.

Never liked the ASH. :thumbdn:

SARSquatch is a great all-rounder, and still a bargain. If you are patient, you might find a user for under $300.

Are there any less common blades though I should consider? Like the jackhammer or something similar?

My favorite in that size range is the BATAC with my NO-E a close second. The Chopweiler is a bit larger but well within his budget.
