2026 is the year I fell in lust with Pro-Tech knives. Although I'm not a super fan of aluminum scales, I don't hate them either, and I think Pro-Tech prices are extremely fair for what they deliver. They do maybe one of the best button locks in the business and, in my experience so far, consistently deliver on fit & finish.

Have you seen their Del Fuego and Shipwreck scale finishes? Ermergerd, I want.

Anyone else dig Pro-Tech? Please share your pics with the rest of the class!

I’ve been tempted on several occasions to pick one up but I’ve read so many less than glowing reviews on questionable, hit or miss quality control that I’ve always pulled back.

Same. I wanted a Malibu when they came out and the first one I touched had wicked lock stick. Soured my on wanting one. That was the only one I've seen in person. Still wouldn't mind one if I found a good one in person.

Same. That’s what it would come down to with me. I’d have to physically handle it myself to ensure it passed snuff before taking a chance.
 
Where are you guys seeing these negative reviews about quality control? Everything I see people say about them is overly positive, something I haven't seen with almost all the other brands I have. FWIW, there's some variation in the button locks, but the action is always good.

OP, I'm not big into aluminum handles either. Fortunately, they do some great work in 17-4 stainless and aluminum bronze:

They need to scale that Avalon down to about the size of the Malibu and it would be darn near perfect for the light and thin crowd. I like the Malibu for a smaller carry but the blade is thicker than I prefer, and the wharny and reverse tanto blade shapes aren’t my favorite.

I appreciate you posting your personal experience and not a story you heard from somewhere... cheers!

ETA: I've bought five Pro-Techs in a row and none have been a problem. If there was any initial lock-stick or break-in period, it was insignificant and does not stand out to my recollection.

I can’t help but assume that you are referring to my comment. My only point was that although I like the design, I’ll just wait until I’ve had the chance to handle one myself. I’m sorry if you thought my post came off as negative. It wasn’t intended as such, because as I’ve stated I haven’t had the chance to handle one in person so I have no way of knowing other than what I’ve heard.

They have an open house in December. They let the public in, to see the operation.

Hopefully I can make it again this year.

Protech builds outstanding US made knives.

I work for my money and prefer knives built for use, thusly, happy that the Avalon has a 4" business end.
