Broadwell/Foster subhilt final fotos

I think this is a wonderful knife with lots of flow to it. As for the handle - blade combination I'm torn between both sides. On the one hand I think this combo is part of this knife uniqueness and on the other hand I can't help but wondering how this knife would have looked with a more "traditional" damascus blade. Ah well maybe someone gets the urge to create a twin for this knife.

Just plain gorgeous knife. I also like the blade chosen for the way you instantly can tell whose work it is.

The koa is superb as is the sheath.

Pleasure seeing it.

Bill, sure didn't mean to start a debate as to weather the laminated blade was "right" for application. It's very obvious it's an outstanding piece for many reasons. One I didn't state initially, is that I don't believe there could have been a more suited handle material chosen for this knife.

I was just stating a personnel design preference in regard to the blade.

If I don't care for a knife, I will generally not comment. However if I like a piece enough to post and give reasons why I like it so much, than I only think it fair to share what I don't like as much, if anything.

Congrats to all four of you for a job well done.

Beautiful end result!

I knew this was going to be good when I first read about the collaboration, but seeing the final images is still a surprise! I can almost picture Coop chortling as he draws the knife from its sheath. :D

I love the matching butt cap and frog. Small details like that bring the whole thing together into a complete package.

I think I actually like the stainless/carbon laminated blade better on more fanciful (notice I did not say "fantasy") or elaborate knives like this one than on traditional patterns.

I try and follow the same mindset, Kevin. It's good to spell these things out from time to time.

I want to thank all of you folks for your kind words. I enjoy making knives and haven't made one in many years that I didn't find pleasing in the end, but Bill's knife really tickled me. I felt the combination of materials and the way all the parts came together were right.

Working with Burt and his steel was great. No flaws at all, and Burt himself is a fine man. It looks like he does some fine leather work as well! We've discussed another collaboration of some kind, probably a good sized fighter. Watch for it at Blade. May have to beg Bill for a block of his koa!

I did like Burt's laminated steel. I wouldn't have minded using some nice damascus for Bill's blade if he'd asked for it, but the laminate was new and different for me, and I like trying something new now and then. It worked very well and gave a new look to my work. Now for you guys who prefer damascus, I'll be happy to accommodate you, too!

Coop, thanks for the story. Sounds like you had fun.

Roger, you must be getting together with Bill later this year.

Thanks again,

David

Hi David - congrats again to you and Burt on a fine piece. If you have another Foster collaboration piece at Blade, then I will certainly look forward to seeing it there.

My 'December' reference was in relation to our annual Bladeforums Best Bowie contest. I told Bill that if he didn't nominate this piece, I most certainly would.

I'm looking forward to the next collaboration!

We've pretty much finalized the design. It will be more of a true collaboration in that Burt will make and finish the blade, and I will make all of the handle. We have to coordinate our design talents so one doesn't clash with the other. When Burt gets me the blade, I'll go to work on the handle. Hope to have it finished by Blade.

Thanks,

David

Unique, great materials, great combination of those materials, and outstanding work by everyone! What more could you ask for,AWESOME!!!!

A very unusual get together of two excellent makers.

I love everything about the knife.
