What a year:p My longest period of being unemployed in my life (or at least the 15 years I've been in the job pool), followed by a change in jobs (and a severe cut in pay), then breaking my leg at the new job (and the subsequent surgery), has made it rough to keep a positive attitude, though rum & whiskey do help;) I also know that as rough as my year has been others have had it far worse, and to those folks go my thoughts and prayer. Aside from all the bad, I've also had a lot of good things happen (started my knifemaking business, made a few new friends, and scored some killer deals on some stuff), so I figured it was time to pay the good forward a bit!

This was the first time I've ever broken a bone, and it illustrated to me how quick bad stuff can happen to good guys:D I was actually surprised at the lack of pain, as well as my inability to put any weight on it. So in that spirit, I figured a contest was in order. This one's pretty in depth, but I think everyone might learn something, so here's how it goes:

Walk into the woods, and fall down:eek: Really, pretend you broke or severely sprained your ankle, and you can not walk on it. You have to go someplace that isn't necessarily going to have a enough traffic to wait for help, so you'll have to either figure a way out or set up camp to wait out the night. Using only your normal day-hike setup, either build a shelter and fire (while scooting on the ground), or build yourself some crutches and begin your trek out. In the interest of not hurting yourself, let's say if you can make it down the trail ~100 yards they're sturdy enough to make it the whole way, and you don't actually have to stay the night in your shelter with a fake bum leg, just stay long enough to be fairly certain you'd live through the night. Document your trip and your camp or crutch setup (and the path you took with the crutches) with your camera and post your pics here.

First place prizes will be a 14" Tramontina Machete that I've cleaned up (sharpened, squared the first part of the spine, slightly rounded the last part, and flushed up and rounded the handle), along with a lightly carried USA Uncle Henry Stockman I picked up at a convenience store in small town in Colorado earlier this year. Second place is going to be an older but very lightly used Buck 110.

The contest will be open for entries until December 7th (my next Dr's appointment). Each entry will get numbered based on the order of entry, and I'll use a random number generator to pick the winning entry. Just please remember to be carefull! Don't decide to 'fall down' and take shelter in a bear's den, or accidentally drag yourself through cactus while looking for sticks:p Have fun, and enjoy the scenery and the challenge:thumbup:

I'M IN!!! Will go break it sunday. What if I can crawl really well?

Awesome:cool: Since I'm actually not supposed to put any weight on my foot, I have to manage stairs on my butt for a while (sure wish I had a handrail up the front porch):D Scooting around isn't too hard on solid surfaces, but as big as I am, trying to get up without putting weight on the broken leg is rough, and I think dragging myself over a trail would be hard. I'm not adverse to seeing it-but if you do it, do this: go in a fairly measured distance, then fall down and crawl until you're tired. Then measure how far you made it, and let us know whether or not you could make it the whole way before darkness or poor weather came up:thumbup: And remember, one leg has to be almost dead weight, you can push off the knee, but not anything below that;)

Understood Walter, great rules and incite! I'll see what I can improvise. I'm glad you proposed this in colder weather. Not being able to run from the mosquitoes might make me bonkers....oh wait a sec too late.

great contest,
part of my job will be to teach people how to use assistive aids(modified eating utensils, reaching sticks ect.) and gait aid(crutches, canes, walkers) so we had to spend one day out aweek using different aids for the whole day, one day in a wheel chair next on crutches next forearm crutches type thing ,

MAN what a learning experience, it is alot tougher than you think not having use of certain muscle groups or extremities. In a modern urban enviroment it was tough, lots of things and people to deal with but in the bush raises a whole different bunch of concerns could be intresting to see the results.

I'm not interested in participating it your contest, however I fully support the concept. If I was to participate in it I would have a totally unfair advantage.

Somehow, my demented mind see's a potential blade sharpening device attached to your shin! If you could get a couple triangle rods inplace of those round ones, your good to go! ;)

Seriously, does that device cause any pain?

Holy schniekeys!!! That looks intense:eek: I truly can't even imagine, but I'm super glad you're recovering:thumbup: You're definitely a dadgum bunch tougher than me!!!! 3 weeks (so far) on crutches has left me a lot of respect for everyone who lives with pain of any kind of disability. Jim's right, it's a lot tougher than you imagine if you haven't gone through it, and I know exactly how lucky I got that it wasn't worse!

Haven't forgotten about this! I just forgot about it this weekend :P

My wife had one of those on her wrist when she broke it. An external fixator.

I had to clean the areas where it is screwed in through the flesh to the bone. That was over 10 years ago. Sorry you needed to have one man. Now for the stupid question. Does it still hurt? This is no joke. On a scale of 1 to 10 what is the pain and is it getting better over time? You sound like your in pretty good spirits or its the pain meds.

I have a very valid reason for asking this and will explain it to you. - after.

I have had 3 different contraptions and a total of 11 surgery's for the same injury. My last surgery was on the knee in September.
I refuse to take pain meds. I control the discomfort through Za-zen breathing and meditation.
I'm not so good with answering what level of pain I am at, and that has caused difficulty's.
kr1 if there is a specific question that I may be able to help you with shoot me a PM.
Don't want to creep out to many other people here.

Interesting challenge. Glad to hear you got into knife building.

I recommend this before you try it.

No need to buy the book, but it might be a good read.
I do 1000 a week now.;)
The ole lady thinks I'm nuts. she cooks breakfast, I do some pushups.
She cooks dinner. I do some more.:D

I did it for real as well. I fell off a cliff and turned my kneecap into pudding. Perhaps not as bad as a broken leg since I could put a little weight on it if I was careful. I will say that I'd probably still be at the spot I did it at if I didn't have my Precise Deerslayer droppoint with me. I cut a staff/crutch and was able to hobble about 2 clicks before a passing ranger stopped to see why I was walking like a gimp:)

I dislocated my Rt. knee exatley a month ago today. Was out w/ a friend thank GOD, at dawn for a day of hiking. Brought along a rifle and pig tag just in case;) Was side hilling across some pretty steep country and SNAP straight down! Obvious deformitity and LOTS of pain. 10 outta 10. Friend went for help. I laid there for well over an hour before first responders made their way to the scene. Mild to moderate hypothermea had set in, as well as shock. They called in a Helo immediatley becasue of the shock and exposure. Paramedic ambulance, 2 National Forest FD Engines, as well as a 20 man Hot-Shot crew to set up an LZ up river near where we set out from. Air-5 from Sheriff's Dept, sent down a litter and one man from the hoist. FD, had me on a backboard and packaged. Flew me to the LZ and transfered me by ground ambulance to Hospital. 2 hours w/ no morphine while stuck on the side of the mountain. Off for a few months on light duty now at Training Headquarters. Heres the worst of all. I Knew all the Rescuers because I am A Firefighter...lol

Mike - so at what point do you qualify as bionic? ;)

Man. This is the kind of thing that scares the crap out of me about hiking alone, but ... rarely will anyone go with me, so ... a cell phone and some preparations, and I just go. Gotta live.

My brother broke both bones in his dominant arm a couple of years ago. Was a real trick trying to figure out how to work (he's an architect), run his carry gun, etc.
