Broke my BK-9

Hey, I'm embarrassed to ask, but is "safety wrapping" some special method? is there a right way to do it? or should I just do w/e I can come up with so that the knife won't cut through the packaging?

you don't want your package handler to get hurt, or the blade to fall out and get lost. no knife return, no replacement! :>

put the pieces into the sheath. lock it into the sheath. wrap the entire thing with plastic or saran wrap like a mummy! wrap that in some news paper, tape it. put in box with padding - don't want it moving around much.

ship it using a faster than slow method (USPS Priority Mail should still be reasonably fast this time of year - flat rate box should be something like $9).

what with Xmas and New Years coming up, and the mail slowing down, do expect delays. plus, hey, KaBar might actually, you know, give vacation time to their people. maybe a whole week! or three! heh.

if you'd sent this out 10 days ago, you MIGHT just have had your new knife back by now :)

I would say either using a cardboard wrap or duck tape the edge and all sharp corners would suffice. Don't want a BK9 tip to come pokin' through the box and cutting some innocent postal worker or delivery person.

What are the two dark spots on the edge on the piece with the handle still on it? It looks like edge damage and might indicate soft steel in that area.I just bought my first BK-9 and have not used it yet. Also several BK-2 knives for a project. Glad to see Kabar stands behind their knives. It would be interesting to know if the heat treat was correct on this knife.

Very interesting. I guess we can remember that ANY knife can and will break in the right circumstance. Hopefully it will not break in a true survival situation for someone. I don't baton much. I don't find the need. I probably would have to if I lived in a really wet climate. If I did, I would not hesitate to use my BK2. I would also make sure that I had a smaller backup knife. It is great to see a company get such great reviews on a regular basis and go above and beyond to stand behind their product. (Other than Toyota replacing the rusting frame on my Tundra truck as a warranty issue. Ha)

Razersharp,

What Bladite and Moose said. We always want to protect our carriers during transit.
I was just busting your chops....it will be replaced. However, I always want to see the broken parts to see what happened. Send it to my attention and I'll take care of it personally. And since it's the holiday season, you might even get a lagniappe.

I just saw another broken BK9 (camillus version) last week.
It broke in half right after my words - "I wouldn't throw a BKT if I were you, it is quite stiff".

It is good to see that you stand after your products.

that one ain't getting replaced ;)

hard lesson to learn, don't throw knives not made for such, they'll break sooner or later.

The dings on the blade, which is still attached to the handle, were caused when I was using this portion to pry the blade from the log, after it broke.

Anyway, thanks a lot everybody!!!:thumbup:
You guys are all top notch. Thank you Ethan and Tooj, I just wanted to make sure that "safety packaging" is not a specific term that refers to a specific sort of packaging. LOL. Silly me.....
I'll make a cardboard sheath that willll hold all the parts together and send it out this weeked. Make sure it's nice and snug.

Again, thanks guys for all the support and response. The Bk-9 is still my favorite chopper, and BK&T is def one of the best companies out there!
I just got my dad a BK-7 for new years. He's gonna love it! :D

Sorry to hear that bud, that really sucks but it happens. I broke a buck 119 yesterday, i just stood there looking at it thinking damn that sucks bad, but i guess i will be buying that BK2 i wanted to replace it. I should not have been doing what i was doing with that knife i needed a sharpened prybar but none around.
Very glad to hear you are getting well taken care of by Ethan and Tooj, its great when you get such good service from nice people that care. Thats why my next purchase im trying my first Becker out.
Good luck.

The BK13 Remora was a bonus knife that Kabar/Becker "gave" away with some of the BK9 and BK7's. There were a limited run from China and once those were gone, they are gone. Some suppliers still have them, but for the most part they are history. The BK13 Remora can be found at most Kabar/Becker retailers, for less than $20. It will still fit in the sheath, but now they are made in the good 'ol US of A. The Chinese run was a "test" group so to speak, and they were a hit.

Good luck.

I do wish Ka-Bar might take note and put out some 1095 versions.

Most people I talk to, say they like it for a small game knife. Now, I'm not a fan of stainless, but I kinda like it the way it is, its easy to maintain, and with that hollow grind, that thing gets unbelievably sharp. I mean wicked sharp. And with it being stainles, run it under a tap,and put it away.

Just my opinion.
