Broke my can opener.

OK, if THREE consecutive respected "Porch setters" recommend the P-38, I'm gonna get one at the gun&knife show I plan to attend Saturday!! :D

If you do, make sure you get a real U.S. made one. I've been carrying a Speaker brand since the 1970's. Still going strong.

Dang it, guys! I came here to look at knives, and instead I'm
buying a 10-pack of P-38 can openers online. :D

Buy a pampered chef one. My wife got one and it is great.
We broke ours. Buy a cheaper one.

The joys of the single life. When I broke up with my ex and moved out, I realized I forgot to pack my pizza cutter. Buy a new one? Nah, just use a big knife. Easier to clean than those rolling cutters.
Growing up we used a wall paper cutter as a pizza cutter.

The P38 came in a box of C rations because everything was in cans. I believe there were 4 or 5 P38s in the box. Too long ago to remember.

Actually, they came in the case because each meal was in a box. And I believe there was 12 meals in a case.

I was in Honduras when my unit (as I was told at the time) was the first to be issued MRE's. We liked them but they weren't filling. I understand that's been corrected. I still remember the C-Rats as we called them. The canned ham and eggs made that John Wayne handy. C-Rats may not have been as tasty as MRE's, but you weren't hungry after eating them. I spent a lot of time in the field and had I saved all those openers I got, I would've had a lifetime supply for free. I use the can opener on my SAK, so no regrets.

Picked up a P-38 (says "US Shelby Co" on it) at the gun&knife show yesterday, and will add it to my keyring or, more likely, my "knife wallet". I've had the Sears 4-way keychain screwdriver for years, but leghog's photo reminds me that I should carry a couple of safety pins. Thanks for the reminder!

If you broke your pampered chef one I think they have a lifetime warranty.

My pistachio opener works pretty well on cans.

In a pinch, I've used the opener on my SAK as an impromptu punchdown tool. I once punched down about 30 blocks in a single night using it -- no place that could supply the actual tool was open, so I was left to my own designs.

I'll bet that thing could open a few pistachios, too. :D

I love the can opener on my Vic SAKs. On average, I can open a regular-sized can cleanly within about 17 seconds. That's normally what I use when I need a can opener in the kitchen.

I've never thought of using it for a punchdown tool, but then again it's been a few years since I've had to. Fantastic idea!
