Broke my first Bussekin (1311!) - and a long overdue hello from Mexico!

That sucks about your knife man. But you're covered for sure. And it is a good point to test your gear out before you need it.

I think mine will be ok :)

Took me a half second to process that picture. I thought the 1311 was on the floor and I'm thinking, man that's a big freakin knife or you have tiny feet. Lol. I'm sure it'll get fixed right up for you.

That really sucks. My 1311 is going strong after eating several young (8-inch or so) oaks. Curious, but what did you use it for before the day it broke?

wow!
I knew coconuts were tough, but that's wild.
not sure what's up with that, but sitting on the hood of your truck should not have caused any issues with heat treat.

I remember a duscussion a while ago, about the heat treatment being messed up, when a guy started quickly poking and arranging charcoal on a fire with his knife, during a camping trip. I would have guessed that, for shure, would have messed it up, but apparently it didn´t at all...one year of abuse later and no difference in strenght or edge retention.

if anybody would comment on a simmilar situation, I´d like to know...

The reality is that ANYTHING MAN MADE CAN FAIL under the right circumstances ........ :(

I believe we sometimes lose sight of this fact considering the exceptional toughness of Bussekin vs. the competition, but there's certainly been a number of Busse's that have broken over the years.

I would agree with those that advocate testing your gear before fielding, but that doesn't really prove anything other than it didn't break in your testing.......:o

Testing your gear DOES NOT GUARANTEE THAT IT WILL NOT FAIL YOU WHEN YOU NEED IT MOST! (Murphy's Law....)

I believe what should really be taken from this thread is that redundancy is essential when you're depending on these sorts of tools.

The saying goes like this :

TWO IS ONE & ONE IS NONE ...... ;)

Hookahhabib, you were wise to bring a medium sized Busse with you and you should be very glad you didn't go the "ONE KNIFE ONLY" route.....

Hey Tyrade83,

What is this knife in your pocket with red/black lanyard ?

I see a mudders handle... 411 ?

And impressive test !....

Where on the blade was the coconut when it got wedged?

Was it on the handle side of the break?

Jerry

I totally disagree on the first part, the second as far as redundancy, is okay.

I didnt say unbreakable, I'm talking about I see nothing wrong with testing your gear before betting your life on it... I've had knives from the Flea market that look great, feel descent, and literally fell apart in my pocket after about 2 weeks, with no use.

Understood, my mistake.

It isn't that I'm specifically saying NOT to test your gear, by all means have at it. Just don't expect that because it passed your tests that it cannot fail in the field.

Case in point, Hookah's 1311 had handled everything he threw at it UNTIL IT BROKE.

Awesome heh

do -not- trash the knife.

send the handle piece to a professional grinder. have him grind a tanto tip with a water cooled system and you are back on your feet with a small handy edc

use the tip and send it to a custom knife maker together with a small folding knife of your liking. have him fit the broken tip to the folder and you have your own SR-101 folding knife :D

Lol bussekin myth is so strong that people can approuve an excuse they imagine like "the sun broke the heat threat" lol Incredible!!!
That broken knife is sad for sure, a hit on my trust about bussekin.

It is unfortunate this happened, especially since the OP is south of the border now. The knife appears used but not abused. If you attempted to duplicate this failure a thousand times it is unlikely you would be able to.

Seeing this hasn't affected my trust in Busse/Kin knives one bit as Raoh67 seems to think. I'm sure they're going to take care of you.

Rien n'est indestructible mon cher Raoh...

Scrapyards and Swamprats knives will always be the best value for money for me.

SR-101 are great steel, I think there is a fault on this model but it does not affect my trust in Bussekin.
