Broke my Manix 2 cutting celery

I bought a Manix 2 a few weeks ago and fell in love with.it, it has been my all-around work knife ever since,. The knife has never been subjected to hard use..
Today when I got home from work I pulled out my Manix, opened and closed out of boredom, I then opened it agaon to cut some celery, and when I went to close my knife, I immediately noticed that the cage was very very wobbly, it still opens and closes, and the lockup is still rock-solid, but the cage is srill very flimsy.
I sprayed alcohol into all moving parts of the knofe, dried it, sprayed it with dust-cleaber, and cleaned it again, and the cage is still wobbly, I looked inside and noticed that the cage stem was crooked, so i'm positive the stem is broken.

I have no idea what could have broken it..I am really dissapointed at how quickly and easily the cage broke. I had convinced a few close friends to buy one and I was about to buy a Manix XL, but now im having second thoughts

I really wish Spyderco would switch the cage material, it would be amazing if they used a metal with a knurled texture.

Im still waiting on a response from customer service, but I hate having to ship it off..at least my Dragonfly is still working well.

That sinks, but it might be a one off issue. I have a manix from three years ago. That thing has been trough hell and back camping, white water rafting and snow skiing. My cage is fine. They'll take care of you either way, just stinks yours broke.

Can you post pics?

Yeah this is one of the reasons I didn't get a manix. I don't trust that lock to hold up in rough conditions (especially celery)

If it were a metal cage rather than the polymer it would have been a different story, I don't see how a lock like that could ever break. Just going to hope they change the material some day, or I might look for a custom cage on Ebay. But will never trust the current ball bearing lock again... One failure is one too many

I just didn't realise the spring was so in the open like that... Seems like a great way to get sand and grit right in there.

Edit: although yes I do realise your problem was with the cage, but I'm just pointing out what I see.

Things break. Metal breaks. Fixed blades break. Folders break. Everything's a compromise.

Hate to hear about your bad luck, but I am 100% sure Spyderco will take care of you. I wouldn't even be surprised to see Sal himself post on this thread!

That stinks like a big fat fart. Im thinkin you could get one of the people on this forum to make you a steel or titanium one, i betcha theres SOMEONE who can.

I always wondered why the cage was plastic. I'm guessing it's too difficult to machine in metal? Seems like it should be possible though... The cage on mine looks fine but I could see if you put too much pressure from one side it could maybe crack the stem.

That seems like excessively high standards. And if it still locks up rock solid, I wouldn't count that as a failure.

I don't care for the ball bearing lock and especially the polymer lock release. Just not for me.
I wish they would use the compression lock on the manix and few of the others.
