Hi All,
Well, the BAS with the broken tang arrived this afternoon and just with preliminary observations, I'd say that our brother forumite was verrrrrrrrrrry lucky that it broke where it did.
Why? Because, the whole blade might be too brittle. It appears that the smith really rushed things on this one. He not only got the tang, but probably quenched the rest of the edge with the blade too hot. More examination is in order here. The grain structure appears way too course for a tempering temperature. I'll bet he started to pour the water with the blade an orange-red. More to follow.

Dan, do you think you can heat the blade up and reharden and get it where you want it?

Cliff,
No, I looked at it with a combo of magnifires and using dye. I'm not even very good a snap shots with BROWNIE.

Bill, got your E-Mail. We'll see. Do I just use hot water to loosen that hardened goo??

Since there were still some grind marks left in the blade, I'll do some more tests before I anneal the blade and start over.

Hi Dan:

As I said in my email to you I checked the 20 inch Sirupati pretty good and the blade was okay on that one but tang was too hard. Since the BAS tang break was in the same place, had same metal structure, looked identical I didn't bother to check the blade. I'm hoping it is okay and you don't have to anneal and start over. Keep us posted.

And, boiling the handle in water for ten minutes generally will soften up the Himalayan empoxy enough to get the tang out. If you have problems let me know and we will get them solved.
