Broken Durba @ Shop

Uncle,
I think you're right, Durba probably didnt harden the entire thing. It is probably me being anal about a small bend in the tang that was already there.

I am learning.:o

All of the tangs I've played with were dead soft. The only welding I ever did on any of them was to weld an extension to make a longer handle. I never did any quenching and never had any problems.

Dave,

Here is the info I got from Chris Reeve (very nice people over there btw)...

------------------snip------------------------

I was able to get with Chris this morning and he said to please contact
Clay Eisenbrand at Eisenbrand Inc. about the exotic wood you are looking
for.

Clay's number is 310-542-3576.

Thank you for your patience with us and we do hope Clay will be able to help
you.

Bridget

I inquired specifically about Pink Ivory, but if Clay is the man who supplies all of Chris' exotic wood for his canes, then this guy has some nice stuff available... I haven't called him yet (keeping the phone open for a call right now)..

Good luck this semester!

I think I will stay away from the Pink Ivory...am leaning towards purpleheart, or maybe Honduras Redheart, or Tulipwood, then there is Cocobolo... there are so many decisions...:(

Thank goodness I dont have the cash to make any of them. :)

Dave and all...

It was late when I posted that... or I hadn't slept much anyway cuz I forgot the most basic thing... searching the net for a site.

Well... I'm awake now. Here is the web site for the above supplier of exotic wood..

http://www.eisenbran.com/

Haven't checked it out yet, BUT if Cris Reeves recommends them, they must have good stuff. :D

WOODCHUCK ALERT!!!

I just went over to the http://www.eisenbran.com/ site to check out their wares...

Sorry to add to your choice delima Dave, but you gotta take a look at the gallery there!!! I think I have a preference for Curly Koa (I knew it was a great tone wood... never thought of it for knives though), and their Ebony choices.

Whats better, you can get everything by the board ft... and the prices aren't that bad either. Pink Ivory (I know everyone is going to stay away from it, but this is just an example) is only $29.00 a pound. I would think you could get a few handles out of a pound or two.

Anyway... it is there to tempt you. I think I know where I'll get my wood stock when I get started... now just to make a decision on what to get :D:D:D

AC,

Check out their sale on 15lb boxes of Pink Ivory $39. (The pieces are small, but you could still do some work with it.)

I saw that!! I think you can request small or large, or maybe it comes with both mixed??

I had to go get a paper towel for my keyboard. Then I think I need to get some C clamps, order some wood and start making big pieces...

Now, if you take small pieces of both Pink Ivory and Ebony, epoxied them together in a staggered pattern (into a nice sized block)... then started to sand, turn or carve the it down into your handle, I wonder how that would look??

I think I'll start a new thread with the link so everyone will know about this place. Some interested parties might miss it on this thread...

:D:D:D
