broken endura

I recently got a dremel tool for my birthday, I wanted to try it out, so I picked up my endura, and decided to grind some small notches on the back of the little hump, so my thumb had more traction, well it looked really ugly, but I like the way it feels, and since this is the knife I wear to work everyday(construction) I don't care how it looks at all. I was really careful to make sure the blade didn't heat up while I did the grinding. Anyway, three days later I was at work lightly chopping a 2x4 during break, and when I folded up the knife I saw a bunch of rust, I looked closer, and i saw a crack in the blade. It starts about halfway down the spine of the knife. It goes down towards the cutting edge about 1/8" and then is parrelel with the spine for about 1/2". It is it looks like rust sort of seeped out of this crack. It is not really very close to the grind marks I made. But I am wondering if it is my fault that it broke. I am pretty sure I voided the warrenty by putting in those notches, and I am just curious if I ruined the knife, or if there was something else wrong with it and i just screwed myself by grinding it and voiding the warrenty?

I havent had any problems with mine at all, but I also put some grooves on the ramp of mine also. I used the small cutting disc and put 5-6 notches spaced about the same as the cuts themselves. I have done both my Enduras and a Police model. Dont know how or if this effects the warranty but dont really care, I like em this way.

Have you been doing any lock tests? That sounds like you have been putting negative stresses on it.

Kile - I think you should send the knife to us. The crack that you are speaking about sounds like hydrogen embrittlement, caused when a free hydrogen atom gets into the heat treatment tank and finds it's way into the steel. It's difficult to explain how this works. The grinding done on the spine could not have caused this.

Another example of Sal really wanting the customer to be happy. What more can you expect?

Sal I will send the knife to you. Thank you for explaining the problem, i was feeling pretty bad thinking that I ruined the blade. It is my favorite knife to use.

I sent my Endura (ancient version) back with my "dented" Wegner (don't ask) to Customer Service. I asked Danelle about them, and they are BOTH being repaired. Let me tell you, that Endura has taken a helluva beating over the years, and I figured I should just retire it. Danelle said they are fixing it!! (by the way, it's marked "Toby" on the blade if you were to ask Danelle how beaten that poor knife was)

I love Spyderco!!! I think it would be cheaper if I bought stock in Spyderco than more Spydies!!
