Broken heat treat? Diagnosis from CRK, help me understand.

Terry M said he would call when they open and discuss it with them and get back to us.
Good video btw. I forget about this. I watched it a year or two ago. I love the way they grind the blade for extended life. That is pretty good stuff. I love shop videos.
But after watching both I did not see the part where they treat the Ti lock bar.

The back and forth is well and good, but how does one "break" the end result?

I believe it is shown on the "exquisite blade" videos done by Knife and Life magazine, my bad. :foot:

Perhaps it wasn't so much broken per se as much as it wasn't done properly in the first place. Not enough flame, not enough time, late on a Thursday..etc.
Until the processes are automated, they are subject to all the things that make us human. Honestly, this wouldn't surprise me as I don't think this process is subject to the same QC as others..

But of course, I could be full of crap too :foot:

I thought CRK is closed on Friday....says in the stickies.

BladeHQ videos or something else?

Or possibly The Exquisite Blade, though I don't remember that being discussed in the video...but it's been a few years since I watched it.

Or....call 'em on Monday? :) I guarantee they'd be very happy to discuss this. Please report back if you do, though!

Sorry guys. They are closed today and I was way to busy at work to get a chance to call anyway. Hopefully Monday.

I called Angela at CRK today and asked her to explain a "broken" heat treat. She stated much the same as you all suspected; She thinks the heat treat was not done correctly or something happened during the process and caused it to not "take". Nothing I did and it technically did not "break" but just didn't take. This is why my knife was returned to me at no charge. I realize this answer may not satisfy all of you and for that I apologize. I wish I could get more technical but to be honest I'm just not that smart in this area as most of you.

That explanation works fine for me. I'm just happy they someone reported back. It seems that far too often people post up and pique my interest and in spite of me or others urging to call in and report back...they rarely do.

Thanks!

I got a call from one of the shop guys today, because my buddy gave me his 21 that he has had for quite a few years now and he beat the piss out of it. Basically after chopping, prying and god knows what it has a minor stick that seems to bother him. Anyhow, CRK called and explained the following.

The process first starts with "sonic cleaning" of the lock bar, then the bar is cleaned with alcohol. They also have a certain percentage of OXY-ACTLYNE to achieve a lower flame. 3 passes roughly achieving a certain color of the lock bar. The lock bar has to be totally clean and free of any impurities. If any of these are off, then once in a blue moon it can happen.
Or perhaps if you beat the crap out of your knife , although without abuse. It can slightly wear away.
That said this knife functions fine, it just bothers him a little. Really a very minor stick.
