Broken Knife! Have you ever? Overused scenario or Reality?

Is the term "The knife will break" over used and actually does not happen often at all?

I have never personally broken a blade ... I have seen a few other break tips of prying or trying to break a pelvic bone on a deer ...

I generally use a saw and axe to split wood but depending on the situation I see nothing wrong at all with batoning wood ... it is much safer and controled if you use your head ... and it often allows lighter loads if you aren't car camping ...

the right tool for the job and proper technique and you're good to go ...

and the young man batoning looks supervised and like he has been taught well ... up until recent years we were all taught to use far more dangerous things just in daily life taking care of animals gardens and any work on the farm ...

and joke or not I have to say very poor taste in the statement about the young man batoning ... it beats him sitting inside playing xbox ...

Since I doubt he will ... I will apologize to you ben and more so say I think it's great you have your son outside teaching him useful skills ... you should be proud of that ... it's far to rare these days.

But I read it anyway. POINT: I'm attacked regularly on here and the moment I take offense, the very same people have to get in on the action. JJ, you were the first person that I blocked on this website, and if you think back, you can recall why.

Not surprised you came running at all. Keep on with your buddy Tommy and both your stays will be short :thumbsup:

And Shiny, you've been blocked too a long time ago. It's always the same guys, the same MO.

I didn't see you get attacked but do the attacking ... if you'd calm down and not bristle up you might find 99% of the members are good people.

And I normally stay out of drama but you posting that was IMHO out of line.

So block me blame me whatever you need to do to be the victim and feel better.

i didn't vote in the poll as it was too extreme one way or the other. I have not exerted so much stress on my knives to cause any damages. I know not to pry with the tip of the blade and pounding on the spine of the knife should be avoided. I have a hatchet and a small forest axe if I needed to blast through heavy cutting and chopping. I recently bought a Fox Golok which is a style of knife I've always wanted as part of my collection.

I have given a warning with points to the first one who posted insults in this thread. I will give more if there are any further insults in this thread.

Answer the question and stop the bickering.

I’ve not broken a knife but my wife figures out ways to break them. It’s ok, she’s blonde.

well, it happens.

But i don't think this as frequent as some would suggest.
Both of the knives i've broken have had somewhat inferior steel(8CR13MOV and "laminated stainless steel").

I don't actually use a knife in any extreme way. I only really sharpen them for grins and giggles as they rarely even get dull. So no, I would never use a knife to the extent of breaking it.

However, I do "baton" using a cheap $10 fixed blade. This is going on the second winter, as I use it to make kindling for my wood stove. Since I sit right beside the stove, I don't even have to get up to use the knife to split wood. I even used a Case stockman to whittle a "wacking" stick to hit the knife with.

I'm not going to vote in this poll.
Yes, I am sick of hearing about broken fixed blade knives, there's no excuse for breaking or bending a knife, except user error.
Anything, that can be split with a knife can be split with a hatchet. Just sit the wood to be split on a solid surface, sit the hatchet on top and baton away. You won't break an ax or hatchet head with a baton.
Anything bigger get a 10 lb. hammer and a couple wedges.
Legal disclaimer, (don't hold the wood and chop and don't chop unstable wood)

In the time I have been posting here, I have repeatedly seen that 19-3ben is an upstanding individual. He is a valued contributor to BF. His posts exhibit honor, commitment to family, and they are always in the spirit of brotherhood.

I would trust @19-3ben to watch my kid. I do not say that lightly. Beckerheads stick together. My 2¢.

Sorry, but I've been batoning blades WAY before "batoning vs not batoning" was ever a debate. You know what? I've never broken a blade batoning. So I'm wondering where all this "batoning will break your blade" comes from? It must be a fairy tale, because I've never seen it. Common sense anyone?
