Broken Tamper Seal on New Leatherman

I ordered a new Leatherman Signal from DLT. When it came, the tamper seal on the box had been cut open. You know, the little clear round tape on the ends of the Leatherman box? Those are not meant to be opened by anyone but the customer. So, I called DLT and asked them and they said they had no idea why it had been opened, they probably had some reason to do it, but could not recall why. They said it may have been for photos to post on their website.

I order a lot of knives and tools from BladeHQ, KnifeCenter, Demko, Arizona Custom Knives, DLT, etc. and I've never gotten a new knife with a tamper seal on the box that was broken. So I am curious, do you guys run into this?

Thanks

How do I know it is new? It's been opened. The QC on these things isn't great, so they look rough new or used.

Well you really should be able to tell if it's been used or not. Does it work ok? If so, I don't think that's a big deal. If it was a collector piece or high end knife I'd be concerned, but it's strictly a tool meant to be used.

I never return knives. I'm keeping it. I just asked if others receive these things with broken tamper seals from DLT? That's the question.

If so, did they explain why it had been opened? I did not get an answer when I called and asked them.

hit and miss for me from about every dealer. mostly come intact. once in a while cut. I always assumed returns or dealer checking it before sending.

long as it's the right product, new and unused and works, I don't really care.

Cant say as I've ever ran into that problem. I know some of the Boker autos run into that but that's because of assembly issues.

People return stuff all the time without ever using stuff and its possible like they said maybe they used it for photos.

Either way if you fine toothed combed it and nothing is wrong, take it down as a curiosity I suppose.

I have a knife, my Jaarvenpaa utility knife, which was photographed for the website pictures of the place I got it from. I know because the wood handle is distinctive.

Doesn’t bother me in the slightest- in fact, it’s kind of cool.

Don’t sweat the details. You’ll put more miles on it your first day than DLT ever did taking pictures of it. If they sold it as new, you can bet it’s new. They’re a reputable company.

Isn’t there a change that it was returned? What are they supposed to do, throw it in the trash?

I thought the seal was to keep the box closed, not as evidence of “tampering.”

I have had seals broken during shipping at least once, but never ones that had been cut.

I'd prefer they check it. Look it over, see if its okay. Better they catch any issues before they ship it and it becomes my issue- especially.if its a model/manufacturer with a history of problems.
