I can't remember. Is it ferric chloride of hydrochloric acid that you dissolve the broken taps with?

I busted a 1-72 tap in my Benchmite handle. I am in the process of putting on a pocket clip. The handle is some sort of stainless steel.

Thanks,

Ric Lee

Dejavu (mini) bit me the other day. "See kids, I told you it was sharp." Better me get injured than one of them.

think that "burning" a broke tap only works in Ti i use ferric for that and matter of fact had to do it 2 times on the last razor i made

Thanks for the info. So how should I get it out? At least I got the first hole tapped. Next time, I'll use a slightly bigger pilot hole.

If you can lay the handle plate on a hard surface you can shatter the tap with a punch.
Works best if the knife is not assembled.

i heat the tap up with a torch and use a carbide bit in the dremel to to grind it out.

Thanks for the tips. I ended up soaking it in vinegar over night. I figure that the acetic acid will dissolve the steel tap faster than it will dissolve the stainless handle. After soaking I hit it with a make shift punch since the 1-72s are pretty small (think sheet rock screw). It came out. The hole was redrilled with a slightly larger bit and then CAREFULLY tapped. So now I have a Benchmite with a pocket clip.:D

thanks again for the help.
