Bronze

I have never engraved bronze but would like to try cutting some. If any of you guys with scrap pieces would forward me some small pieces, I'll polish & engrave them & post pictures of the results. I'd need to know exactly what type of bronze is sent so please identify species please. I'll also mark pictures with ID info of bronze. I can be reached at 910-221-5288 EST, Ken

BILL & MIKE ---- A question. I'm wondering if the sil. bronze would give curls when cutting if it was first annealed instead of chips ?? Does bronze behave differently after annealing ? I realize that bronze doesn't need annealing to be engraved --- I know if I can cut hardened 440C and 4140, I can engrave bronze. Just wondering about it's characteristics ........

MIKE, I would like to thanks you again for sending me sample pieces of bronze. I will post the results of my test.

Ken
Could be. The bronze I engraved was a pistol frame. It cuts very predictably.

Bill, I wasn't aware you were an engraver too, how's about posting some pictures of your work please ? Ken

In the presence of Ken Hurst, I never claimed to be a real engraver!
Some of my work is on www.billdeshivs.com

Are you familiar with Steve Lindsay's tools? If so, please give me your opinion of them.

Mr. Bill, thanks for the compliment but I assure you that if you had spent the last 51 years of your working life engraving firearms, you'd be where I am today, perhaps even further along. We all struggle )hopefully) to do our best.

Yes, I know of the Lindsay tool, own one and know Steve. You would cut a lot of years off your training by buying one. It will help you with your cuts but won't make you any better at layout & design, that only comes with experience. Study and copy the work of other engrfavers whose work you admire. As you become proficient in copying their work, start trying to alter the designs so as to reflect your ideas of design rather than being a copy artist. In other words, develope your own look.

Mr. Bill, I visited your web site (I don't have one) & looked at your work. I would suggest you take your pictures outdoors on an overcast day ! It is my belief that there is more to your work than is seen due to the quality of the pictures. I see a fluid flow to your engraving which is certainly important & a tight design overall --- to many engravers like to cut a tendril and leave to much negative space/background between the leaves --- you didn't which in my opinion is certainly good. If you'd like, give me a call at 910-221-5288 EST, seven days a week & we can discuss this further. Ken

Here is one of my bronze projects. I like the way it works, engraves and could be left natural or patina any color under the rainbow. I tend to only use natural but a dark patina would look very cool.

Ken, this is another one from your apprentice Jere Davidson.

Can't get photo to show , sorry

JOE, you have the same problem as I do, you're techno challenged. I hope you'll favor us with a larger picture of this view & a side view.

Bruce, thanks for the pic. Yeah, Jerry Davidson along with many others such as Tim George, Lisa Tomplin, Jon Robyn and Davis purdue amongst other that go un-named. They all trained under me sometimes for as much as approx. 10 years. Needless to say, I'm very proud of my guys (Lisa included).

Ken
Thank you for the compliments and suggestions. My pictures do suck, but they were taken indoors-and very quickly. I have been engraving for 30 years, but only occasionally. As you know, you have to do a lot of it to stay proficient. I'll be retiring from my day job next year and was actually going to buy an Airgraver this year at the Blade Show, but Steve wasn't there! I'll get one soon, though. I should have a lot more time for engraving when retired. My restoration business takes up most of my free time right now.

I think I have the pic posting problem worked out . I'll try one more time ! Thanks for looking. Comments + or - welcome .

Joe
