My brother has been telling me for a while now that his birthday is coming up, end of the month. Soooooo...thought I would share the folder I am working on for him. Don't have much time to get this done but the hardest part is behind me.

It's a Bose Backpocket pattern(no big surprise there), 4 1/2" long, A-2 blade and spring, 410 SS liners. This knife has a half stop and will be flush jointed at the tang end and bolsters when completed. It will be halfted with the jigged bone in the images and I'm going to put a nice little SS shield in it.

I would say he must be a most excellent brother to deserve such a fine gift.

Birthday presents like that are oh so cool

I'll love to see that one when it's done.

Superb craftsmanship Kerry! You are lucky to have one of the best as a mentor! Your brother is sure to love it! -Matt-

Ya know, I'm thinking, in a way, we're all brothers here, aren't we?

Tony's been a gracious and most patient mentor for sure. But heck, it doesn't even seem like he's that, we have to much fun talking about this stuff.

Man Kerry, you've got one lucky brother! Your work is just looking phenominal. I can't wait to see this one finished.

Looks pretty sweeet so far! Can't wait to see the finshed product!

You are doing a outstanding job there Kerry: Its starting to look like a Tony Bose knife. Great work all around A+ --------------------

Nice job.  I hope your brother doesn't look like you.  :D Or at least have less knives in his head. :D

Slick work Kerry
touching gesture..can't wait to watch her progress

A slipjoint geometry question if you don't mind. I see that the front of the spring is about 1/16" behind the front of bolsters. If, say, the blade at pivot point is 1/2" wide so that from center of pivot distance is 1/4" from spring in all three positions(open, closed, and half open) where is front of spring in closed position...just in front of end of blade as it is in open position? Or in other words, if spring is 1/16" behind front of bolsters is pivot center 5/16" plus behind spring? Hope I am making sense. Thanks Kerry.

Kerry,
Thanks for posting the pics. It looks like a very worthy project and you are doing a great job. I'm glad I got to see the progress shots, it's renewed my interest in folders.

Bose is a new name to me. Are those blades available to mortals like me?

Good luck with the project and keep us abreast.

Richard

I'm sure glad you didn't throw Pi into the mix:eek:

Ok, don't take this wrong but the front of the spring doesn't move :) You knew that but there is a different way to look at how this all works. Make sure you start out thinking that the tang is basically a square with the pivot exactly in the center. If you get that part figured out then that can be scaled up or down to match whatever size knife you want to make.

Your measurements are generally correct but that's a starting point. You work them and fine tune so that they look good. You don't want the spring sitting high or low at any position on a half stopped knife. The trickiest part to consider is if you want the tang to be flush jointed with the end of the bolster. Make sure you leave a little extra on the tang to be taken off so that it can be tweaked.

I dont even know if I answered your question. Ask more if I blew it:o

:D That's good stuff.

Well I'll tell ya, the available ones are difficult to find. I see knew ones all the time because I am "near the spout where the oompah comes out", but none ever make it to my pocket. A couple of old ones went up on Ebay over a week ago and had no problem selling. You could go to the Blade Show and put your name on the stacks of cards and see if you get lucky. Or....google like crazy and see whats out there.

I didn't ask the question but to me, you just said a mouthful  In one short paragraph you simplified a books worth of questions I've been thinking about the last week or so. Thanks dude ;)
