Got my Brown S35VN PM2 today and was so excited, until I saw this. I guess its not a big deal, but it kinda is. Especially on a sprint run. The bevel is completely uneven, as shown in the pic, especially at the bottom where it is tiny. At the tip there are a few huge scratches and a bunch of scuffing at the very tip. There are little scratches all over the blade side with the steel type. But the ones at the tip are super bad. As you can see. The Golden, CO side is better. The grinds on both of my production PM2s were perfect, but my 2 sprints (this one and the blue G10) have problems. The blue wasnt too bad, but still irritating. I still love Spyderco, especially sprint runs, but it seems Q&C have had some problems lately.

More QC complaints.... I got mine in the mail today too. It's a production knife and it is not 100% perfect and I'm ok with that.

None of mine are perfect, and Im okay with that too, but the scratches are ridiculous. The picture doesnt show them that good at all.

I would call them and ask for an exchange. I wouldnt expect perfection but I think the amount of scratches are extreme but see what they say.

I have never had any Spydie that looked like that, whether it was a Para 2, Delica, DF2 or whatever and no matter where it was made at either!

Send it into Spyderco and let them sort it out. The very last picture is hyper picky in my opinion.

The slight unevenness in the bevel wouldn't bother me too much but those scratches are pretty bad for a new knife. Wonder if it was purchased and returned?

I think Im just gonna deal with it. I dont feel like messing with sending it places and what not. It is a user after all. I just wanted to show it and see what people think and document the issue if later on something comes of it. And I know the edge angle and bevel is super picky I just figured I would show it as well.

What degree of imperfection with your particular example would you not be OK with? I'm with the OP on this one as far as the blade scratches go. Sure it's a production knife, but one that costs about $140, right? I read a post elsewhere extolling the perfection of the blue G10 M390 Para 2 (with pictures included) so of course Spyderco can get it right--and has with the ones I have, save for the J.D. Smith.

At any rate, I envy your tolerance of such cosmetic issues; I'm a little too uptight to look past such things in this price range, whether the knife is a user or not.:)

Cheers,
Isaeus

Depends honestly. If I intend to try and flip the knife for a profit then I would not be happy with something like that. I will admit that the scratches are an issue but the uneven grinding is not really a concern. But as a user, I'm probably going to scratch it up anyway. In fact, it being scratched will give me more motive to actually use it.

Maybe Spyderco should scratch up all the blades to discourage the flippers. ;)

I too have the same problems as above. And my edge is folded over from the factory. Extremely unimpressed.

No problem with mine. I really like the shade of Brown on these.

The blade is a tad shorter than my other Para's, but I'm glad since it leaves the tip just a bit thicker.

I agree with you Isaeus. Paying that much money for a knife I would expect a perfect finish with no quality issues.

Personally I wouldn't worry about the bevel, doesn't look that bad to me for a production knife. The scratches on the other hand I would be pissed about and certainly send it to Spyderco or get a replacement from the shop you bought it from.

I just bought one of these s35vn brown ones yesterday just before I seen this thread so I email the seller and gave him a link to this thread so he could inspect them before he ships them to me. He said that "all is good" and the ones he has doesnt look like the pics.

So I am happy with that! Not sure if he looked at the bevel but not sure I really care about that, just the massive scratching!

I'm not involved in the Spyderco sprint run game at all. It just seems to me like a daunting task to get a large amount of knives produced in a short amount of time, and all of them be perfect. Maybe their approach is to get them out in a timely fashion and deal with any QC issues when they arise.

OP, Seriously I don't think your specimen warrants any QC refinement.

Here's a factory edge on my Ti Mil that requires some help.
BTW, I kept this knife and plan on using it.

Sorry for the bad cell phone pics
The glare in the 2nd pic really shows the uneveness.

Ditto. It's off by what, .5 millimeters?

If that. Edge eveness from the factory doesn't concerne me so much, as it is correctable through sharpening. However, blade scratches are another matter - I prefer to put them on myself.

Spyderco should be informed of such QC problems, otherwise, how can they address them? Reporting bad QC helps the company and the consumer, IMO.
