Hi, I have a question for everyone. I am new to Hinderer Knives and just recieved a XM-3". The blade is beadblast I am pretty sure and the titanium lock side is brown. I can not find anywhere on the Hinderer site that shows this. Is this something someone as done after market? The knife came with the new monkey edge titanium scales and also the G-10 that came with it. The Titanium spacer for the G-10 is also brown. If anyone has any other questions please ask. And does anyone know what blade steel this is? This is the sharpes knife I have ever received!! Thanks for looking.

Please post a pic. My best guess is that it is not brown but anodized bronze titanium. Without seeing it, cannot assist much further.

I will try and get some good pictures but not the best camera. You may be right about the anodized bronze...thanks will work on pictures.

Don't know much about the 3" versions but I'm pretty sure if the blade is not stamped that it is Duratech 20cv. At least that's the way they do it for the 3.5's and XM-24's. Should be the same for yours. If not, I'm sure someone will correct me.

Here are some pics of my bronze anndized XM-24 (top) for comparison. The one directly underneat has a bronze filler and clip. Beautiful knives. Congratulations on a great score.

Thanks so much I will check the blade.

All you need is a photohosting Web site like photobucket and a little self education to post pics. Not too complicated and folks here will assist if necessary.
Here is a pic I have posted before that shows my anodized bronze 24 between 2 Gen 4 XM 18 3.5s. Note the more matte finish on the 24's blade steel. It is marked S35VN. The more reflective 18 3.5's are Duratech 20CV.

I have some pictures now. I think this finish is called "Dark Earth" this is what I am guessing. And I am not sure of the blade. I seems like it may be a bead blast but not sure. It does not look the same a the bead blast frame I have so not sure. It is a XM-3". Another question.....is there any way to find out the number of each style made. Thank for looking and any help you can give me....I love this place.

This one is a bit puzzling for me. At first I thought the frame may be anodized bronze then sand blasted. But, I hope someone more knowledgable pipes in here. Remove the clip filler and peek at what lies beneath. Maybe it will add some clarity. As for the blade, it would help to know when the knife was originally produced.

Looks like the lock side is DLC and the blade working finish. Here is a DLC coated knife that the Hinderer Crew did:
http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/899336-XM-24-with-Flat-Dark-Earth-DLC

I don't know of any 3" ones that they would have done with DLC so I would guess it was done aftermarket but I have been wrong before and have only a limited knowledge of all the different knives they are producing, so many alternatives and customizations.

I don't believe there are any official production numbers.

Rich

Is the flash making the finish in the first picture lighter? Because in the blade pictures, the frame looks to be bead blasted then anodized.
Also, like RDA said, the blade appears to have the "working finish", which beat blasted first then tumbled (I think, though it might even be tumbled before and after the bead blasting).

I did remove the filler and beneath was the same finish as well as the filler. I wish I new when it was produced but I am not the original owner. The stand offs are different than my other 3". The grove in the center is much wider that my other 3". Thanks so much for you help.

Hi Rich, I am not sure what DLC is but it does look line the finish in Robs picture. I hope it was not done aftermarker as I prefer stuff done my the maker. I can tell you the blade is sharp, very sharp. I may send it back to Hinderer when they start doing refurs again. Thanks so much for your help.

You are right. The picture with the blade does look more like the real color. The first picture is lighter. And looking at the blade it looks like it could be bead blasted and then tumbled , I could see that. Thanks so much for your help.

Perhaps what you have there is a knife that has seen official or unofficial (or both) "spa" treatment. There is more than one process on every surface. Again, puzzling and needs input from more knowledgeable peeps. Sorry I cannot decode this one for you.

The lockside is sandblasted with bronze anodiziing, the blade has a working finish. I would guess it was done for a show.

Thanks very much Rob. Is this something I could send back for a refurbish when you are accepting knives for refurbish? Thanks again and have a Merry Christmass.
