Brownells Tough- Quench temp question

I just purchased a gallon of Tough-Quench from Brownells, whitch I understand is Houghton's Houghto-Quench "G". On the container it says to use at room temp, do not preheat oil. Does anyone use this oil? And if so do you preheat it, or use at room temp? And also in a search on this site, I found a thread that says the Houghton quenchant specialest claims it will fully quench 1095 upto 1/4" thickness, eventhough it is made for O1 steel, Has anyone tried it for 1095? Thanks in advance for any help. J.D.

I use tough quench for almost all of my quenching including 1095, and before I use it I always heat it to around 110-150 degrees. I have been very happy with the results.

Sometime last year, information was posted on this forum comparing quench
speeds of various oils at different temps. IF I recall correctly, Tough Quench
does bennefit from preheating....to a max of 150f. I suspect that the reason
Brownells recommends not preheating, is that they are offering it primarily
for use with O1 tool steel, which would not require the additional quench
speed gained from preheating.
I believe Don Fogg uses Tough Quench on 1095.....thats about as good a
recommendation as a guy could want, I think. I don't know if he preheats it.

Tough Quench apparently has a "sweet spot' at 150F. At 100F and 200F, it is a 13 second oil, but at 150, it is an 11 or 12 second oil.

Thanks for all the info. I will try preheat of 150f for 1095, and room temp for O1.
Thanks again, J.D.

I used it at 110-125 with really good results FWIW.
Everyone have a great weekend.
