Browning 679: what steel is this?

Not familiar with that model number, but I would guess AUS8. I don't recall any Browning knives made from ATS34.
 
I have an older Browning Stockman and I believe it to be made of 440-C. Holds a nice edge and easy to sharpen. That's my critieria for a good knife althought the rosewood handle is nice too.
