I am new to slip joints (except for SAKs and the like) and I would like your opinions on the Browning 520 stag trapper. Thanks.

I've never been crazy about trappers (nothing at all wrong with that pattern, just not my cup of tea). But if I WERE to go out and buy one, I'd definitely think about this Browning. That's a GREAT looking knife.

Thank you for your replies!

I just got the knife and I am impressed – it looks nicer than the picture and is very well made. Nice size, not too big or too small. The clip point blade came very sharp, which I have come to expect from Japanese made knives. The spey blade is sharp and will shave, but is not quite as sharp as the clip blade.

About the only thing I can find fault with is the pins; because of the contours of the stag, part of the edges on some of the pins stick out – I suppose this something that difficult to avoid with pinned stag scales.

That IS a great knife. I bought one for my Dad for Christmas and he loved it.

OK, were talking about 2 different knives. frank k's looks more like a Saddlehorn and yours more a standard (nice one to, that Stag is great!).

Sorry, I misunderstood.

I know this is a bit of a generalization......but just about any slipjoint made in Japan with a "Browning" label on it is going to be a winner ! I have looked long and hard at your model in the past.........every example I ever handled was exceptionally well made. Great fit, snap, edge......and value priced !

Nice to see Browning knives getting a little respect on this forum. Even though they are contract knives, I've always found the QC to be exceptional.

By the by, you can score some excellent deals on older browning folding lockbacks on ebay, since theres never been much of a collector market. Very high quality generally at a very reasonable price if you are looking for an excellent user.

RE:Browning.....I bought this 520 awhile ago and its a very fine knife and I'm not even a Trapper fan that much.
Great steel and Stag......good fit and finish and the walk and talk we all love.
I also picked up two Amber Bone Traditional Stockman both model342.
The first one I picked up for $20 and was disapointed in the back springs but everything else is well done.
The second 342 I picked up recently for $12.95!! I wish they had more, this one has very good backsprings and the same quality finish..nice amber bone ..I just finished touching up the edge and was curious what others had to say, so i dragged up this old thread

Cheers,
Kap
