Bruce Bump, MS ~ Arabian Black Gold Bowie

Another beautiful and classic Bump! Thanks for sharing Caleb.

PS: Caled, just my take on dark backgrounds. They are dramatic and perfectly done that's for sure. But I personally still prefer lighter backgrounds for knives with dark materials/treatments. Showcases the knife better cause the dark background blends too much with the knife itself, and make some of those lovely curves disappear.

Absolutely amazing knife and photogrraphy. Beautiful, distinctive damascus. Congratulations to Bruce, Caleb and the owner.

Wow. Just breathtaking.

Bruce - that really is nice. I am really impressed with the pattern welding. How did you (if you don't mind) get the color contrast between the spine half or two-thirds and the blade half or third? You know, the blade portion is lighter, but I don't understand how to get that effect.

It adds a lot of visual interest.

this one is a success, for sure.

Patrice, thank you! I appreciate your feedback as well. I've definitely thought about any consequences a dark background and dark knife combination might present. I like to see the knives (and background) coming out of the shadows. I like the look and feel of that kind of image a lot. The trick is making everything blend together yet making the knife separate. I light my knives to show shape, texture, colour but I also light them to make for a very emotion filled image that makes you feel something when you see it. I like to show individual details as apposed to just lighting everything up. There's a lot of balance going on. Honestly though, not everyone is going to like my style and that's okay. I do one, distinct, Caleb Royer look and try and do it very well.

Incredible detail on that knife. Photos resolution show your craftsmanship. One day I hope.

Caled, I was unsure about posting feedback cause I surely did not want to sound like I was putting down your work. English not being my first language, things don't always come out like I want them to. :o Just want to make sure you know I do like your work.

Now that you explained to me your approach I can appreciate it a lot better. When I look at it now as a dramatic representation, it makes a lot more sense. I am all about creating not only a physical object but hopefully stimulating people's imagination. And your pictures sure do that.

I never say, "Oh my God."

However, I just heard those words spoken clearly out loud, and I seem to be the only one in the room...

Patrice, I love feedback of any kind! I didn't take it as putting down my work at all. I really do appreciate your feedback and comments about the photo. I am always looking to improve so I love it when someone sees something they might prefer different and tells me about it. Everyone has a unique perspective and I want to hear them all.

I'm glad the image makes more sense from the perspective I conveyed before and I definitely agree that it's "not only a physical object but hopefully stimulating people's imagination". Thanks again!

I constantly think "Surely the bar cannot be raised any higher" and then I see something like this. Just Wow!
