Hi folks !

One think I don't like very much is the letters (writtings) on my police and Millie blades.

I wish these knifes don't have the engraved names of their models on the blade.

Did anyone try to brush them off ? If yes, how did you do it without damaging the blade ?

One more thing, is it only me or is there anyone who doesn't like those letter either ?

Thanks in advance,

Regards,

Andre Tiba

I don't like them, and I know there are a few others around here that don't like them either. (I'm sure removing them wouldn't effect sales Sal, so would you consider it?)

As to taking the letters off...I have no idea how you would do it. (I don't own either model.) I would imagine though that you could use sandpaper? If thats possible you would start with very rough sand paper and finish with very fine sandpaper. Don't try that untill someone with more knowledge on that responds though.

Actually, I like the idea of knives having positive names like POLICE and MILITARY displayed on the blades.
It's names like TERMINATOR, RIPPER etc. that I object to and will most likely have a negative impact on the jury if you should ever have to defend yourself after using one even in self defense.

Understood, but a jury would respond just as well if it didn't have RIPPER or MILITARY.

I just don't like walking around with a knife that claims Police or Military... when I don't belong to either...(yet).

Just my oppinion though, and I understand where you are coming from.

We removed the "Police" from the police model a number of years ago and customer demand put it back.

The engraving more denotes the philospphy behind the design rather than claim to be either Police or Military.

Agreed; however, if S.Sarandon or T.Robbins happened to be on that jury, they would object far more to 'Military' than 'Ripper' - after all, poor old Jack & Hannibal were just misguided souls in dire need of Federal sponsored therapy, as opposed to evil, baby burning, uniformed killers :D

Having a knife with the name police on it puts me off and it seems like asking for trouble unless you are a policeman.

The "Police Model" has been around since 1984. The first version said "Pride, Integrity, Guts" on the blade, lined up so the "PIG" was enlarged and stood out.

Then it went to Police Model, then nothing, then Police.

The pattern has endured many years. Even our attempts to create more "modern versions" (such as G-10) failed in the market place.

The pattern has many features. Chris Carraci developed the AFCK as a spin off of the Police model.

It is difficult to remove the stamping. The engraving on the Military is not as deep as is possible for a skilled knifemaker to remove. We could probably do it at Spyderco, but we'd have to charge for the project.

Perhaps if we make an odd Military, like a D2 version, we could leave the lettering off.

Mr. Glesser- how much would you charge, and what would your turnaround time be?
Thanks.

I too would rather there be no words on the blade.

I don't carry a Police for that reason. When I upgrade to the new Military, I would very much be interested in having Spyderco take off the word "Military". Very much indeed.

It just doesn't feel right to me. I acknowledge that there are those who like it, but having the option would be great.

If anyone out there has a blank police and would rather have the word stamped on it, please email me. I'll pay shipping both ways...

What about EMT, is it just that Police and Military are condusive to more explaination. I showed my Millie to a cop and he didn't even flinch. Why would he, it isn't what the blade says that makes the knife. The SOG Vietnam bowie, Seal Team 2000, none of the names matter. Ka Bar notorious "military blade" They are all just knives. I think if you run into a cop that gives you a hard time about a name on the blade he is out to get you anyway and your screwed regardless of what it says. I think the name adds to the knife if it suits it. Fluffy Bunny is not high on my list of names though. Take Care.

99% of buyers don't care that the name is on the blade. Neither will 99% of juries care if you are hauled into court for some untoward use of a knife.

In the UK we do have specific legislation against "combat" knives. A nice and vague term, but one the Military could very easilly fall into.
This is one of the reasons that I only carry the Miltary when I am going directly to a site and I am going to return directly from it.

For this reason I'm not too bothered about the wording on the Police model, but would prefer a plain blade on the Miltary model.

Good thread, valuable inofo, thanx.

A thought to share; we cannot export cerain models like the SPOT into the UK because the "Self Protection Option Tool" has the word "protection" which makes it illegal to import into the UK.

Whodathunk?

So the POWERS that be in the UK do not want there people to have anything to do with protecting themselves. What would the leaders of Great Britan have thought about that 60 years ago?

I do like the Military, and I don't mind having the name on there.
Mostly because actual Army issue will say Army or USMC or USAF or other.
Now if it said US Army, I might feel a little weird about it, but nothing I'd worry about, Any user of mine will get letters rubbed off of it by polishing sooner or later.

Which brings us back to the original question-what's the best way to get rid of the lettering?

Jewelers rouge and a Dremel will at least lighten it.

Oh, yeah.
Try an abrasive polish.
You can get a decent polish at any car shop, like autozone,
or whatever you have out in your part of the country.
