I got such a kick out Fitzo's comment about "brut de forge" being a term used for forge finished blades it got me in the mood to do some forging. I selected some of the finest 1959 Nash/Metro leaf springs I had on hand and forged the blade on the top of the picture. I had also finished the other knife so I thought I'd kill two birds with one stone and post a picture of both. The "brut de forged" blade is around 9" overall. It was totally forged with hand held hammers and nothing else was used to shape the blade. I did sand it down some by hand. The other knife has a 7" blade that was hand forged but also grinder enhances and rubbed down to 2000 grit and then etched. The handle is sambar stag and the fittings are wrought iron from the Titanic. Blade steel on the finished knife is 5160.

Nice one Ray.

Oooo, that is gorgeous!!!!!
I love seeing the forged blade next to the finished knife! It shows how you turn a lump of coal into a diamond, really amazing!!!!

Well, that came out nicely, Ray! Very, well, brut-ish, so to speak. :)

Pretty lines on that finsihed piece. You're building up a nice stock for the OR show.

Wow! You have serious skill with a hammer! I like the handle and finish on the finished one.

I'm new to the forum and starting to think about trying my hand at knifemaking. I gotta say Ray your knives inspire me. Everyone I have seen has been awesome.

I really like the design and execution of the fittings. Excellent.

Thanks for the replies! The junk I make these fittings out of is pretty good s__t. Found this wrought in an old concrete barn foundation. It was being used as reinforcement like rebar. It doesn't take to much to turn it into fittings. Its still good on the inside....... Now if I did get a chunk of iron from the Titanic I'd use it as part of a knife.

Naw actually it was left over from when he smelted the steel in Liverpool...:D Nice as usual Ray. Oh by the way, so I'm a purist eh.....

If you don't have any 59 Nash/Metro leaf springs your a purist. :D You getting ready for the OKCA Show? I need to stop making knives and get some sheaths made up.

Yeh I forged all day. Need to finish a few up and get them ready. I need to get ready for Atlanta and my MS test. I hope to present this year. If not then there's always next year. I don't have any Nash springs but I do have train springs and couple hundred pounds of Cat spring. Forged a blade out of each today. Made a small forging hammer out of cat spring. It turned out pretty nice. Have fun and don't work too hard,,,, yeh right.:D:D
