Brute Blade at Admiral Steel

OK Gentleman, the can of worms is open now. What do we do next? Who has a decent idea on how to find a royalty owner? Or should I just grind the damn blade little bit different? Also let’s keep in mind that blade geometry is one of the main features of this knife. As previously mentioned I could change 20% or some more the knife looks but again it would not be a brute but some type of modified kukri. What do you suggest now?

the brute is not a khukri (the MachAx is closer to that ideal). it's more a bolo.

with that said, go look at other, similar work, compare and contrast. make your own design. for research purposes, it's accepted practice to make a one off clone, just never sell it. ever. not even as a prototype. by then of course, you're on your way to an improved model.

or buy one of the other designs ;)

siegle makes something that is darn close, and comparing a one off vs his is a no brainer.

HI also makes a "villager bolo" that is suspiciously similar.

or buy one for $100 off ePray or something. why accept less??

i'd love for KaBar to make a limited run, micarta handles, no coatings, superior steel, GOOD sheath. it would cost more. it would be awesome. then they could produce a normal model. same for the MachAx.

Dishonorable, unethical and despicable are just some of the milder words that spring readily to mind. A design is the intellectual property of the designer. When someone designs something to sell, and you deprive them of that sale through theft of the design, that's pretty dirty in my book. If you want it, then convince Ethan to have it made again. Otherwise, do without. It's not yours, it's Ethan's. Period. End of story.

Have I expressed myself clearly enough?

You missed sleazy slimy slithering scum sucking maggot but otherwise yeah very clear and right on the money. I agree without having the respect and decency to get permission from Ethan this is a dishonorable, unethical and despicable act no matter how anyone tries to rationalize and justify it.

how about the "entrek destoryer"? seems like a nice knife

Mr. Becker sold or otherwise assigned the rights to his line of knives to Camillus, KaBar bought the rights from the bankruptcy courts. Mr. Becker CANNOT give anybody permission to create a Becker Brute, even if he wanted to - he doesn't own the rights. I don't know about royalties for producing the knife, but the rights aren't his anymore.

I did a patent and copyright and trademark search, and I couldn't find any listed for the Becker Brute or a design by Ethan Becker. Maybe someone else could work with that retarded us goverment search engine better than me though.

Actually you are not correct, Ethan bought the rights, not KaBar. Look up a post called a Message From Ethan Becker. He had the rights prior to going into the venture with Kabar.

If I could buy it I would, but we all know that is almost close to impossible.
AutoCad costs over $10K and I need only one blade figure that out. For the issue of infringement of intellectual rights I am more than willing to pay for that too. Since this was manufactured as a product for many years, I would be more than willing to pay for whatever is the associated intellectual fee for one blade. I am not trying to rip off anybody here.... When you guys are so tough go and complain to Chinese who manufacture each and every blade that ever showed up on US market without any respect.
And last if I wanted to do harm I would not post it on public board and ask everybody to help....Go figure.
If I indeed stirred any body's feelings I apologize and still would like to acquire that damn blade.. (but not from China)
Respectfully

Bob there is nothing wrong with your inquiry as you stated doing so in an public forum is about as open and transparent as you can be. My comments were about the act of copyright infringement not directed at you personally. Seems you have gotten some information you did not consider. You may want to search the members list locate Ethan Becker and send him an e-mail with your request. IMO no responce is NO any No statement from Mr Becker is NO and yes is any arrangement you two work out between the two of you. If he grants you or anyone permission to produce the the Brute I will be the first in line to purchase a legitimate authorized Becker Brute. Good luck

Thank you for clearing that up. I was wondering how Ethan could enter into a partnership with KA-Bar, if he had nothing to bring to the table and did not own the rights to his knives. I had always assumed that he designed the knives and entered into partnerships with manufactures to make his knives. But that is an assumption not anything I know to be fact. Amazes me that anyone would post misinformation on a forum like this completely ignorant of the facts falsely stating some one does not own the right to their own product because for some reason they ASS-U-ME that is the case. Pretty much destroys their own credibility when they do that

According to a patent lawyer I once spoke to, there is nothing in the law regarding 10%, 20% or any % change that makes it legal to infringe a patent.

Regardless of legality or if it is to be sold, asking for permission to copy it is just the right thing to do.

I've seen a lot of knives that look similar to the Becker Brute. You could change the shape a little, add a swedge, use a different handle, to avoid patent infringement. In any case, as long as you are not selling it, it is legal to copy.

or maybe the kershaw outcast. i've heard some pretty good things about it.

I have an Outcast and it is a good blade good weight distribution, feels good in my hand. D2 is good steel. That said for heavy chopping which is what I expect from a knife this size the D2 tends to chip and D2 is a bear to sharpen in the field. Both the BK7 and BK9 did a better job for me in a side by side comparison in fact strange as it seems the BK2 is a better chopper IMHO. The quarter inch thick blades weight seems to make up for is smaller blade. It is like chopping with a razor sharp hatchet. For that reason the BK2 has become my go to on my hip camping hiking hunting survival knife. The BK2, BK7 and BK9 are all 1095 high carbon blades that are easy to sharpen and did seem to hold their edge without chipping or dulling better than the Outcast. I can understand the appeal of a Brute with the same quarter inch think 1095 blade as the BK2 with the width and length of an Outcast. That would be a brutal indestructible blade. Would love to own one

good answer, LR. well then, what about an ontario rd-9 night stalker? looks like they've got one going on fleabay...

9 inches of 5160. sounds pretty good to me.

That is a nice enough looking knife. For a hard working blade I really prefer high carbon 1095. For a good solid 9 inch chopper, I personally would and did go with the BK9. I liked my BK2 so well I bought another BK2 and one of every one of the Beckers except the TacTool which is next on my list. While I have knives that cost 8 times as much as my most expensive Becker, my Beckers are my favorite go to work gitterdun knives. Here are some pics when they were new, alongside my Outcast. From Left to right Outcast, BK9-Becker Combat Bowie, BK7-Becker Combat Utility, BK2-Becker Campanion, BK2-Becker Campanion and BK11-Becker Necker. The small knives alongside the BK9 & BK7 are free bonus knives that come with them.

and some other toys I got at the same time. XD9mm, Cougar 9mm, Ruger10/22 and my Edge-Pro

My bet is if you pick up a BK9 you will like it enough that you will end up with the rest of the Becker knives too. Also willing to bet the BK2 will blow you away

i've got a BK9 on the way now; and trust me, i'm checking my usps tracking number every 2 hours. can't wait! don't wanna hi-jack this thread, but i love the pronounced clip point on the 7. it may be my next conquest. thx for the good info Long Rider!!

I wouldn't trust any of Phil's CAD drawings. He likes to write things like "Sales Department Bullsh**" on them. :p

Sorry to necromance this thread, but I couldn't resist. :D

Plus it looks like somebody, somewhere done something...

anybody ever see this before? looks familiar!

I wonder if it was authorized by Ethan.

I am usually all for screwing over the big companies and saving a buck (love that pirated music), but Ethan is a man I have come to respect by reading his posts and seeing how he takes care of his customers; so I say if you're going to steal a design steal one from Red Scorpion or someone who screws their customers over.....not the head of one of the few companies these days that still know how to take care of their customers. I am in the process of starting my own business, and I am actually going to use Becker Knife and Tool as my model for customer service and building customer loyalty.

I dunno how relevant this is to a thread from 2009, but there is an AutoCAD clone put out for free by the makers of SolidWorks. It is called DraftSight. If you're looking for a cheap (FREE!) professional CAD program, you should check it out.
