BRUTUS (A.K.A. DH Potato 4)

Looks friggin awesome Derek. Makes me want one...

That would look pretty sweet wrapped in some leather ;)

:D I keed, I keed....I know your a kydex whore. :D

that's huge will regular Becker handles fit on that?

that's a nice knife. I've been watching the threads on this for a while. I'm glad to see you finely got it in you hands.

The scales look good except for the flat spot near the pommel, hey should be pointy. Had you asked him not to put any grips on it? possibly a communication breakdown?

It's one hell of a monster though.

Holy God!
I'd love to see this in production, not that its likely, but still.
What a hell of a blade.

That is one massive blade! :thumbup:I do like the handles, it looks like an eyeball. Potatoes have eyes, Brutus is watching you!:)

Hey Fellas, Here is why I handled Brutus for Derek. I can't explain it but the holes moved in HT. I used the BK9 as a template for the holes. During the final polish I tried to put the scales on to marry them and the holes didn't line up. Not wanting Derek to be without the blade for the camp out I put a handle on. Here is the build. I had to get a little creative because of the size of the handle. Normal scales were too small. I would have preferred not to do all the extra work for nothin but that's the way it goes. I won't try and copy a factory handle to fit injection scales again. Learning experience!

And there you have it. I didn't have time to polish it and get it in the mail in time, so it's at 150 grit. I left enough material to fine tune the contours as well. You can't add material back, but you can remove a touch to fit your hand... I swear Murphy had his hand on this one big time. I was about done with the knife and it slipped and fell and wedged perfectly between the support and the belt of my grinder. Ruined the blade in 2 seconds. This was number two and the hole issue. What a pain!! Needless to say, between the remake, the free Bk11 I sent for the delay and the free handle, it wasn't such a good time... Sometime that's the way the cookie crumbles!

Yeah, she was certainly a victim of 'ole Murphy and his shenanigans. Took it to the gathering and had an edge roll on some freshly cut pine in about two places. Was not very happy, but then I got home, stropped out the rolls on some 600 grit, and decided to go for broke on a super old piece of darn near petrified hickory. She held up like a beaut, and while she isn't quite razor sharp after it, there were no further issues. Think maybe the edge was just a wee bit thin in those two places, but she looks to be good now. Not razor sharp after that, but sharp enough. I like that it is rough, it is going to be a user, so she ain't got to be pretty. Plus I can work on it and do some little stuff and have that "I messed with it some" feeling.

Overall, very happy with it Chris. I will try to get some user pics this week sometime.

Oh, and I am really liking the micarta. Feels very nice in the hand.

I think that knife is outstanding! It has great lines. I'd love to know the weight. I also think the grips look awesome and very ergonomic. That eyeball looks like it should be on a velociraptor or something. Cody, I think I might like to send you an HI Chiruwa Ang Khola in the future to rehandle. Do you that sort of work? Again, Derek that thing is awesome.

Thanks Fellas, I usually like to do a full convex that goes to zero degree, but with Derek's saber grind I could tell that the zero would be way too thin. I put a secondary convex bevel on the edge, but it sounds like it was still a touch thin. With the weight of it, it doesn't surprise me it needs a REALLy thick edge... Good to know.. Glad you got it adjusted OK. I have switched to 3V for all future blades. That will solve many rolling issues as well. Peters will be doing the HT... I like an edge more on the slicing side than really thick, so sometimes rolling has occured. It's always easily fixed on the O-1, but I think using 3V will help also... I'm also going to a very limited number of custom blades and will be doing small runs that are water jet cut and HT'd, but ground and handled by me... Here is a little intro on my youtube channel. http://www.youtube.com/user/C3Knives?feature=mhee I'm still getting the video thing figured, but it's fun and I get to play with knives, and get out... At present I sell almost everything locally. Not sure I have the personality for this internet stuff, but giving it a try.

Derek, I hope she serves you well. Let me know if there are any issues and we'll get it fixed...

Great looking blade! Looks like Cody was great to work with. time to go Action Jackson with that baby!
