I was at a Pow-Wow training locally for Cub and Boy scout leaders yesterday, it was great, took another class on knots and ropes, etc. While I was there, I picked up a brochure on an upcoming Wood Badge leadership development program. I'm thinking of doing it, has anybody here been through the program? Is it worth while?

While I have not been through it, I highly recommend it. Wood Badge is well respected in the Scouting community. I've never met a Wood Badge Scouter who didn't have their s**t together.

Go For It.

Wood Badge is super awesome. While I have not personally been through it, both of my parents, my granfather, and my uncle have been through it. Not to mention my grandfather and my former scoutmaster and his wife all taught it. It is an amazing oppurtunity to learn skills that will help you to overcome problems in your day to day life. Very awesome oppurtunity, take it.

Thanks guys, I will. It is really hard for me to get away, so I wanted to make sure that it is worthwhile. I have to say that the folks I've met since being involved in scouting are some of the most impressive people I've run into....

I received my Scouting Woodbadge from the Quebec Council in Canada back in 1988 (Ithink), It was a great program, you will not regret it and you will have fond memories for the rest of your life.

i'm a Wood Badge Trainer in Vancouver, Canada. i think it's a worthwhile program =)

They have made it a lot more convenient to obtain over the past few years. If you are into the Scouting program it's pretty much the Eagle for adult leaders.

Sounds great. One of my Assistant Cubmasters might go with me, he was asking how the program is structured, can anybody help?

I have not been through it - I'm not even eligible yet. My Scoutmaster just did last summer, and he loved it, and appreciates all the tips and tricks he picked up. I've been told that the NYLT (National Youth Leadership Training) Course is modeled after Wood Badge, and my Scoutmaster has attested to it.
I have completed NYLT, and I'm on the Training Staff for it this year. It is great.

So if the youth version is any indication, then it is a superb program.

I also know several trainers for Wood Badge, and they all recommend it highly (obviously.)

I am currently working on tickets for my Wood Badge SR829. The training was excellent but the hard part is writing your ticket items and pulling it all together. I would recommend going for it. BSA needs more trained leaders to help deliver the promise to our youth.

Thomas, Thanks. I understand that it is a leadership development program, but it appears that it is set or geared towards the outdoors (they require a Class 3 physical for participation). Anyway, I'm sold, I e-mailed the trainer!

While there is some physical activity, the course is not physically demanding enough to require a Class 3. Lawyers.

I have been strongly advised to bring a comfortable folding chair and seat cushion.

Also, bring whatever you need to insure restful sleep in a situation where several others are sleeping near you. Ear plugs would be one such item.

I'm on the Wood Badge staff this year, too. It's a heck of a lot of fun and not really physically demanding. You'll have a great time.

Thanks for the info. I sent out my registration today, I'm already looking forward to it. My sessions are scheduled August and September this year here in Upstate NY (Twin Rivers Council).
