I was worked into scouts when I was 9. I stayed until I was 18. I'm 26 now. I'm an Eagle Scout. In the last 8 years, our council was dissolved and many of the troops were merged and forced to join a council over 100 miles away if they wanted to stay active. We have a camp not 10 miles from my house that used to host state jamborees. Now it sits wasted.
My time in the scouts is some of the fondest memories I have, but the current situation is a pale shadow of what it used to be. We hiked parts of the AT and the Continental Divide. Spent summers on Big Bend. Went to Philmont. White water rafted and canoed several rivers across the country. For Louisiana boys, we did some traveling. Now I've heard that the local troops don't even go to summer camps, let alone winter camps. You aren't even allowed to carry a knife unless you are Life or in the OA. You have to borrow one from the Scout Master or someone who is allowed to carry one.
I'd be thrilled to start my own troop when my son is of age, but he'd learn more about the outdoors by flipping through my old scout manual than joining up with any of these local yahoos.
