Why carry in the waistband? Only two reasons that I can think of that are good for IWB carry:

1. It is illeagal to carry that kind of blade, so you gotta keep it out of sight.
2. Your a ninja out of uniform, and actually go on the offensive with a knife.

Don't give me that crap about you don't want your attacker to know you have a weapon until the last second! If he knew you had a weapon, he may have not have attacked you in the first place. IWB is harder to access than pocket carry for SD, and I find it quite uncomfortable. Is there any reason why one would would want to (legally) carry IWB?

Reasons I've carried IWB are simple: comfort and access.

I found a small to medium size folder IWB just forward of my front pocket was comfortable enough that I could forget I had it. It was easier to get to than reaching into a pocket and it was more secure since nothing was going to snag it accidentally, either.

As far as letting bad guys know I have a weapon to discourage them from attacking me, I find that alertness and confidence provide a better deterrent, and weapons don't show all that well clipped to a pocket anyway.

IWB doesn't work for me. There isn't enough room between the W & B for anything else.

few weeks ago just put together a small fixed blade with an IWB kydex sheath.

like Esav said, its quite comfortable, dosent snag on anything.

plus, (and again like Esav says) it stays put nice and snug. Unlike anything else that i have carried on my belt in the past, that goes flopping up and down, patting me on the hips or a$$ as i run and walk.

if its uncomfortable than fixed blade was probabbly too big

o... plus it frees up more pocket real estate!

At one time, I was carrying a fairly large dagger IWB SOB (small of the back), almost horizontal. The sheath was a heavy plastic, pretty thick, and I had no problem with it jabbing me, even sitting down.

A leather sheath would have been ideal, though.

You just have to move them around until you find the right spot for comfort and access.

I always carry IWB. For me it is a lot more comfortable than in my pocket and also allows me to carry pretty much any size folder i want. Also i don't find it neccessary to advertise that I am carrying a knife. :p

I find carrying a large folder (specifically, a Spyderco Military) is much more comfortable IWB than any other place. Also, carrying ANY kind of knife in a public place is a crime in my country so I don't really want to advertise that I'm breaking the law ;)

i carry a firearm iwb off duty, but im a cop so the legal restrictions dont apply. rarely carry a knife iwb, always a folder, sometimes a fixed on a belt sheath.

I can't carry IWB for the same reasons jhillas described. I find it easier to carry IBRF. In Between Rolls of Fat.

In a true self defense situation, it is the bodies natural reaction to tuck and cover the vital spots. (think fetal position yet not that extreme). A knife IWB is a natural position for the hand to grab. It's tough to get used to, but it is natural body mechanics. In a weapon retention scenario where a firearm is involved, the right front pocket is the absolute worst spot for a folder.

And the third reason:
No pockets!
I carry IWB when I'm at work because I wear surgical scrubs.

Thats good... I needed a good laugh. For me the Glock 36 or a 1911 goes IWB. My knives go in pants pocket. Probably just because its a habit, and that where I always go to get it out of reflex.

IWB is good position, as it allows you to carry up to 10 inches fixed comfortably and safe (in case of car accident, for example), when carried on the side.
It's more stealth than on the back, or even then folder clipped in the pocket.

I can only use a couple if folders for IWB and only if I am in my skivvies around the house. I guess IWB is like competitive eating- the belt of fat theory works against both.

Really just individual preference for comfort and convenience, like a lot of other things we carry. For example I just hate to carry anything slung over a shoulder, very uncomfortable for me and always slipping - camera, courier bag, rifle, purse ;).... I'm fine with most full-size auto pistols carried IWB if it's a good holster like an Alessi or something custom, but revolvers and large knives don't suit me there.

The thing is, I tried it out today, and it hurt me. I sat down and just about got it in the manliness! I was carrying a full size Manix in front of my right pocket, maybe if my manliness was smaller it would work...

Been carrying a handgun daily for 25 years and I used to think my friends and co-workers who carried IWB were either masochists or carrying for show not for use. Now in hindsight I understand just how smart they were. And is the same for knives.

1) Less noticable to the non-knife/gun public. Less need to explain to other LEO's, resturant managers, etc...

2) COMFORT- try it you just might like it.

3) Presentation is just as smooth as other carries.

4) Less chance of snagging on other pocket items.

My EDC- 1911 .45acp., spyderco G-10 police SE, G-10 police PE, dodo

Pistol never varies, knives vary with mood, style of dress, expected work area/environment, IWB carry for at least 1 large folder minimum, either opposite pistol or SOB.(or both)
Maybe that older wiser thing really works. Jim
