I have used bubble alumina as a surface application but have not tried casting it. It has a "crumbly" texture after it sets up and small pieces snap off when they come into contact with a hot billet. In other words; its not real tough. I use it because it holds up well to borax and has a very reflective quality.
The best scenario would be to cast the lining in castolite30 and then coat it wit a 1/4-1/2" layer of bubble alumina. I have poured flux trays and kiln shelf pieces from bubble alumina. It held up pretty good. I once made an expendable melting crucible for a melt that required shattering the crucible once fired.
