Knife makers have asked me for over a decade: "why did you call this thing a Bubble Jig Fred ?" After many discussions about what constitutes a "jig" I must admit I did a poor job of naming this tool. For this is not a jig at all; it's a sight reference. It allows the grinder to make use of his eyes to reproduce grinds. It doesn't really hold a blade in a fixed position when grinding.
So you'll notice in the thread title that we've added that this is a [SR] sight reference tool and not really a jig.
In retrospect I wish I had spent more time choosing a name, but like many things in life, it just happened as I was trying my best to make it a productive day.
Regards, Fred

Hey Fred, is there anyway to get replacement wedges? I still have my bubble jig, but after several moved and giving my grinder to my dad, the wedges and alan key have gotten lost. Thanks

No problem at all. Email me with your paypal address and I'll send you a paypal request for the shipping cost, no charge for the wedges. Fred

are these solely for use with a platen, or do they work nicely with a slack belt too?

There are hundreds of uses for this tool. Anywhere you want to hold a specific angle, reproduce an angle, or even interject more than a single angle this is the tool to use. I have a plumber friend that uses one to set pipe and fixtures. The longer you have one the more uses you'll find. I place double sided tape on the bottom of the magnet and use it to surface bone and ivory; it's very accurate.
So YES!
