Buck 110 BG42s

Very nice those two 110s have you ever thought to have nice slabs put on them?

I suppose you mean send them back to Buck for custom slabs and a spa treatment? They’re unused and I like Buck’s Buckeye Burlwood with the brass. But really, I hadn’t thought of it until you mentioned it just now. Great idea.

With only 100 BG42 112 blades ever made..Few ever are offered for sale. I know of one loose blade and one complete knife. 5 years ago I bid on a Bucklite that was sent in during the reblade program but was 'sniped' at 2 seconds left and in 2008 I had one in my hand..It was beat up in a brass frame and since I was a new 112 collector passed. I would buy that 112 today and consider it a bargain lol!

or send them to leroy he can put some lovely slabs on them, maybe ivory or a nice stag handle :)

I wish I knew where my 110 with BG-42 was. I sent a 90s vintage plain Jane 110 for a blade swap and then used the heck out of it for a few years.

There has always been a mystique about BG-42 and Buck. It's one of the early super steels and has carried a premium price for years. Only after more than a dozen years searching I found a 112 with it and added it to my collection. If it wasn't a NIB (Buck gave you the option to buy when the reblade program was on) I would would probably use it like I have all my 112's in any super steel. I lucked out and got a Slim Pro Plus in S35VN that was incredibly sharp...Almost dangerously sharp and won me over to super steels. The only one that I haven't tried besides the BG-42 is the S45VN Koa BOTM and I am just waiting for the right time to play with it.

I have 4 BG42 Bucks left. 2 112s, a 905, and my Vanguard. Is like to have a clip point 110 in BG42.

I dont understand the fascination though. There are many better steels these days. I guess it's nostalgia...

thats it exactly.

thats it exactly.

Nostalgia - is a primary factor in the cost of almost every collectible. If people desire to acquire something, in large enough numbers, almost anything can become expensive. Even if it is not rare.

Beware the flip side - beanie babies, garbage pail kids - wait, those are red hot again. Etc etc etc

Well I think a lot has to do with the stamp..It's cool looking lolol! It's only when you go to sharpen the difference between super steels like BG-42 and good ol 420 show up. For some models it's rarely used and you get exclusivity. For example the 112 and 501. The 'Master Series' is another desirable set. If it was offered today in the Custom shop, especially stamped on the blade instead of etched, it would be a popular option even with a stiff upcharge. I searched for a long time to find a 112 made with it simply because it is a great 112 rarity. I think Magnacut is the 'new' BG-42 steel first because it is really a great knife steel and few knives are made with it so far and second again for the exclusive factor. But when I first started collecting 112's I could have cared less. I was all about drop points Nickel silver frames and odd handles. I really didn't understand David getting excited when he found a BG-42 110 or even a S30V. My new 112 goal is to get a drop point Damascus blade made or even a Dammisteel drop point..just because I think it it would look cool!

I must be weird. I used the heck out of my BG-42 Buck 110. In fact, I sharpened it so much that a noticeable amount of the blade was gone after a few years (thus its retirement). I did not anticipate that BG-42 would come to an end so abruptly and that someday it would have added value for collectors. I would still do it, though. That knife cut a lot of stuff!

Leroy put on some piano key ebony to customize this one
