while reading a previous post i see there are several blade materials available for 110's how do i determine what type mine has. it was sent back to buck for a replacement blade in '97 according to the symbol methinks.

If it is the standard 110 that you can get most places for around $30-40 it probably has 420HC stainless. The other steels are available from the Buck custom shop. Bass Pro has a model with 154CM and Cabela's has a model with S30V.

I am sure it is 420HC. No problem, Buck does a great job with that steel and they keep cutting for decades.

Yeah, so it's either 420HC (Most likely), 154CM, or S30V.

I own a buck vantage in 420HC. It really performs well, they do a positively excellent job with their 420HC steel. I can get mine very very sharp. As sharp as my AUS8 SOG Flash II.

are the custom buck 110s from buck's custom shop any different (other than materials) from the regular buck 110s? do they have fit and finish comparable to other customs?

Find your year on here.

Then your steel by this list.

Before 1981.- 440C
1981 to 1992.- 425M
After 1993.- 420HC

Buck did do some blade replacements with premium blades but that would have been at a pretty good price. You would have had to ask for a premium blade as well. If it is a premium blade it'll be stamped as such.

Otherwise, it is as Bear provided. A 97 blade replacement 420HC unless stamped as a premium.

My 110 has 1 dot to the left of the model # and 2 dots to the right side. Where does that fit into the dating system?--KV

Why didn't you guys post this in the Buck Forum?
AFAIK
1974 to 1980: one dot on either side .110.
1980: two dots on the right side .110..
1981 to 1986: two dots on either side ..110..

like the people above said the standard version comes in 420HC. you can get either the cabelas model or a custom shop in S30V.

I know this is an old thread but I'm new here. I've been collecting mainly pocket knives for 40 years and I didn't realize I don't know much about them and I'm learning a lot here. My question is my 110 has one dot on the left side and two on the right. As I understand it, it was made in 1980 with 440C blade steel right? If so is it worth more than other 110's?
Thanks

Depends on how mint and whether it has the sheath/box/papers you can search that big auction sites for completed sales to gauge how much they go for. Two more places that offer different steel/styles is copper & clad, and silver knights blades. I just got a aluminum frame / Micarta handle 110 from copper and clad. The weight difference is amazing.
